Yea, I know, basic thing: Go to Doctor, yaddayaddayadda :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes: But alas, they were of no help.

In high school, I had a massive insomnia problem, and eventually, it got better. However, lately, I've went to bed, and woke up 3-4 hours later, extremely tired, and cannot go back to bed.

This is MURDERING my energy. But For the life of me, I just can't get to bed. I can't afford sleeping pills (Which is why the doc couldnt help), plus, I don't typically ever want to use them...

Does anyone know of any untraditional ways of helping yourself get to sleep? >_<

Which is why you should keep seeing the doctors. They have professional insight. We may give you some trivia, but we do not have the credibility or ability to solve this problem. Posting on these forums won't help. Go to the doctor's again.

The doctors have done nothing everytime I've went to see them, except send extremely expensive bills. We don't have the money to continue to do that. MediCal only covers so much ._.

The doctors here (seriously, no joke) if you're overweight, they say it's your weight, even if it isn't relevant, and shove you out the door, then send you a huge bill. In fact, if you search the past issues of the newspapers here, you'll find a case last year in which a doctor did JUST that, and the lady died 2 days later due to some sort of issue that was EASILY fixed had they just actually helped her.

My sister has ~$2000 in doctors bills and never received actual help due to her weight. >_>

Do you drink anything that has caffeine in it, such as sodas or coffee? If so avoid drinking those.

Your weight can make a difference with sleep problems. It can make it harder to breathe, which may cause you to wake up. Honestly with the number of health problems associated with being overweigh, it doesn't hurt to try and lose weight. Don't just diet, exercise. I find I sleep really well on days that I have done a good amount of exercise.

When you are trying to sleep what is going through your head. Are you just laying there board, or do you find a million things going through your head, or do you find your self thinking about something a lot? I find that I can't sleep and will wake a lot during the night if I have a lot on my mind. This may sound cliche but try counting sheep or something similar. When I have trouble falling asleep I think about flying an airplane. By focusing on the airplane it clears my head and I am able to fall asleep and stay asleep.

Nope, I've had maybe 2 sodas in.... 6-8 months now? And I can't drink coffee without a ton of sugar/creamer, which we don't buy, so haven't had one of those in a loooong time :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:

Caffeine typically does random things to me. It CAN make me hyper and unable to sleep, but it can also do the opposite, I typically don't like to risk it.

I've been losing weight actually, 30 pounds in a few months... lol. It's slowed down though, think I actually gained some weight lately, but that may be muscle, considering I had like none to begin with :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:

I typically have to clear my mind when I go to bed, I have TONS going through it on a daily basis, so I sit in bed and just start thinking of emptiness and such, XD

Thanks for the tip about exercise, I'll try that, I typically don't exercise, but I do get quite the workout at the food bank lifting boxes for 5-6 hours whenever I volunteer XD

Congratulations, that is quite an accomplishment.

I would take that back to your doctor and point out you are losing weight, but still need some help. Also it might be a good idea to see a doctor that specializes in sleep problems.

Exercise definitely helps me, if i havent in the day i dont feel tired at night, maybe thats age but anyway. i tend to just watch TV or listen to music or read a book. Let yourself relax. If you wake up get up have a drink of milk or tea or something then try and go back to sleep again, sometimes we wake up because our body needs something.

I hate sleeping pills because they make me feel like crap, when I do get up.
I have tried Tylenol pm and it works okay. It's non-addictive and you don't get the sleeping pill "hangover".
Being overweight, you may have sleep apnea which causes you to stop breathing and wakes you up. I agree that a sleep specialist would be in order. Try the tylenol and if you get no results, try the specialist.

Here's something I do to get to sleep. I count...but really...really...slowly. I visualize each number in my head and then make it look different. Like...Id think "One" then picture it being decorated in green and purple polka dots. "Two" would look different and have maybe blue stripes. Its very boring and dull but you fall asleep quickly. When I do it, I never get past twenty. If i don't do that, it takes me two hours to fall asleep. With that, I'm out in under an hour.

I can understand your frustration with your doctors. Sadly a lot of them no longer take the time to talk these kinds of things through with patients. To be honest a sleeping pill in a person of your age should only be a short term, last resort kind of thing anyway.

Some good ideas have already been mentioned. Another thing you can try is when you wake up in the middle of the night and can't get back to sleep, get out of bed. Go into another room and watch TV, or read a book, listen to music etc. When you feel like you can actually go back to sleep then go back to your room and get in bed. If after 20 or so minutes you still can't sleep, then get back up and leave again.

For a lot of people lying in bed trying to sleep is counterproductive since it just adds stress and worry to the situation. The idea is that you only associate your bedroom with sleeping. If you live in a dorm room, then you can apply these same rule to your bed. Our psychiatry professor used to tell us that beds should only be used for sex and sleep.

Terminal insomnia can be harder to manage than onset insomnia. I know this may sound like a lot of psychobabble bs. But, this, plus some of the other suggestions above, are some of the non drug based therapies that MD's who specialize in sleep try.

    Good luck!

While this sounds like there might be an underlying issue that the American Medical system can't solve, there are a few quick fixes.

    Tylenol PM
    Masturbation
    Hojicha tea
Melatonin Suppliments (Dont use if you have ANY mental health issues... ie: Depression)
Eat foods with magnesium (Foods rich in magnesium are legumes and seeds, dark leafy green vegetables, wheat bran, almonds, cashews, blackstrap molasses, brewer's yeast, and whole grains. )

Also, make sure you are excising during the day.

Try drinking green tea or chamomile tea - or any herbal tea but I find these ones work the best, before you go to bed it works for me and I'm a horrible sleeper.

hey, i totally know what you mean
i have to wake up at 5:50 in the morning to take my bus
(well my bus comes at 6:40ish but u know taking shower, eating breakfast...etc)
anyway, i think drinking warm milk helps-thats what i do before i go to sleep
also i take melatonin, which seems to help-its just a supplement so i don't think
its like a drug or something. also taking warm shower before going to bed helps i think.
but yea, highschool sucks cuz u have to wake up freaking early, and we have so much
stuff to do that we can't even go to bed early.
