I didnt see a thread for this, so forgive me if i just missed it.

So obviously for dildos and strap ons and all that good stuff theres condoms, but for "other" stuff, how do you stay safe? I'm a bit clueless. :/

    Dental Dams!
Now, I wouldn't say they are the most... pleasant of things to use, but they are quite effective in preventing transmission of skin-to-skin diseases/infections (think herpes and genital warts). Also, they can be hard to come across.

    So I present a tutorial!
How to Make a Dental Dam From a Condom!

And also, you can make sure to get tested regularly if you are sexually active!
    HURRAH!

Is it bad that I'm a virgin (and a gay guy to boot!) and I already knew how to make a dental dam from a condom?

From what I've heard, folding cling wrap so you have a double thickness is a decent option when there's nothing else available, but dental dams are the safest option. I don't know many people who actually use them, though.

The cling wrap is also supposed to be the non-microwaveable kind as well.
