I just got out of the mental hospital and they placed me on Zoloft 50mg. I've been taking it for about two weeks now, and I have noticed periods of mania and increased suicidal thoughts. I need help figuring out if this is just me acting this way or the meds.

Highly likely that Zoloft is causing these thoughts. I can't say what you should do but if it was me I would stop taking it.

    Hi CROSSY ROAD:

I think you need to talk to your health care provider ASAP and tell them what you're experiencing - because they have access to your history, they can help determine whether the medications are causing the issue.

    Good luck.

Hi, I'm currently taking Zoloft (sertraline) myself and I know increased thoughts of suicide is listed as one of the reasonably common side effects especially in teens. You mentioned mania which if I'm right in my thinking is associated with bipolar disorder, if this is the case for you then I would not advise taking Zoloft as it is often known to make the disorder worse due to the medication being an anti-depressant. I would advise contacting your doctor to see if there any alternatives that may be better suited to you? Best of luck with it.

Thanks for the feedback! I'll talk to my psychiatrist.

Hi there! Please do not adjust your meds without talking to your psychiatrist or another medical professional. Adjusting your meds on your own could be very dangerous.

Hang in there, Crossy! As other posters have noted, this is definitely one of the not-so-rare effects of various SSRIs. Your psych will definitely want to know. Everyone's chemistry is different, and he/she wants to find the right key for your lock. If Zoloft isn't it, you just gotta change.

I've been on Zoloft for little over a year now, and the exact same thing happened to me. 50 mg is a quite high starting dose, and the body has to work hard in order to keep up with the heavily increased levels of serotonin.
For me, the mania episodes disappeared after two and a half weeks, and suicidal thoughts decreased and eventually stopped over the course of a month.
    Hope it helps.
