Really bad, painful, recurring ingrown toenail

Discussion in 'Physical & Sexual Health' started by travelinsoul21, Jun 16, 2010.

  1. That pretty much sums it up, used to I could cut it and pull it out and it would go away for a while, now its so deep I cant pull it out with tweezers anymore. And it looks terrible. Help!

Go to a foot doctor. But for now, soak it in salt water. DON'T try to pull it out yourself, that's what's causing it to grow back the same way.

I had the same thing like Echidna1 said just go to your doctor cause they can remove it so it doesn't come back it doesn't even have to be a foot doctor, my family doctor did it. They are usually the result of trimming your nail too short

I used to have the same problem. I had both of my big toe nails dug out by a doctor several times. Two years ago my employer changed insurance carriers, and I had to change doctors, and it was a good change. I told my new doctor that I had both big toe nails dug out multiple times, and he said the best thing would be to do a permenent partial nail removal. It was the best thing I have ever done. I had it done at my local doctors office, and he did a great job.
If you keep having this problem ask your doctor if he can do it for you, and if he can't do it, ask him to referr you to someone who can. You won't regret it.

The specialist you're looking for is a podiatrist. Most insurance plans will cover podiatry services. A podiatrist will talk to you about the options and he/she will explain how to care for ingrown toenails.

My doctor only took off a small amount of nail, about 1/4 inch was removed so I still have most of the nail intact.

yeah, you need to see a doctor. You need to make sure it doesn't get infected, because if you do have get it removed, an infection negates any freezing... which leads me to a funny story when my toenail was ingrown and infected, the freezing had no effect and the doctor had to remove it. While the extraction was occuring, I was laughing hysterically in pain, so much so that several nurses and doctors had to tell me to shut up because I was scaring the other patients.

I had a recurring ingrown toenail on my left foot. Twice I had a complete removal of the toenail (not permanent), and ultimately had a partial permanent removal. That was half my toenail, but unfortunately I heal too well--it has been steadily growing back further and further into the permanently removed portion. However, I have had no issue with ingrown toenails since, anyway.

If it happens again, though, I'm getting the entire toenail permanently removed. XD

(Also, never stub your toe a few days after you have an operation on it. It hurts like a ****** **** *** ***** ******!!!!. I think when I did that was the most and loudest I've ever sworn.)

I finally had to go to the doctor for an ingrown toenail and they didn't remove the whole nail. Call a doctor and schedule an appointment.
