I like peanut butter, and it's a good high calorie food that's healthy... I eat the kind that is only peanuts with a tiny amount of salt. When I swallow it, it gives me a pain in my chest until it get's through (my esophagus?)...

I think it gets stuck since it's sticky and bulky. Is this bad for me?

I try, but apparently it gets stuck and if i eat enough it happens anyways unless I eat really slow. I can drink water with it, but I get peanut butter all over the cup...

But I'm wondering if it can be harmful for my esophagus.

hmm my only experience with peanut butter is that it's prone to get stuck a bit in your throat. Did this happen recently? if so, I would maybe talk with an allergist about it.

sorry maybe I didn't explain it well enough. It hurts when it goes down (as if you accidentally swallow something too big and you can feel it slowly getting down your esophagus but painful on the way down...)

hmm then i probably would speak to a doctor and or a allergist, just to be safe, especially if it continues. You wouldn't want your throat to start closing up at all if that's what it's doing...

It wouldn't be an alergy or anything, unless your lips tingle/hurt when you eat it. Just try eating smaller amounts maybe? You don't want to go shoving bowl fulls of anything down your throat.

If this is a big problem, or at least a big enough annoyance that it discourages you from eating peanut butter as often as you’d like to, you might consider switching from the chunky to the smooth variety. (I’m assuming that it’s the chunky type of peanut butter that’s giving you trouble since you mentioned that you’ve tried to chew it into smaller pieces.)

I was reluctant to read this thread, fearing that the peanut butter wasn't being eaten...

Weird question - have you tried heating it?

Get peanut butter on the cup, then! Drink water! That's what washing dishes is for. =P

If I have a dry mouth/dry throat then plain peanut butter sandwiches do take a while to go down. It doesn't hurt me, per se, but adding something to make the peanut butter more slippy does help.

If you're a fan of PB&J's, I'm personally fond of sugar-free fruit preservatives to pair with the peanut butter. Makes the sammich easier to get down, and also it is delicious.

There are some foods that can cause esophageal spasm beacuse they are so viscous that the normal peristalic action of the esophagus isn't enough to propel them into the stomach. People describe it as a sensation of losing their breath or feeling like something is stuck in their throat.

Usually consuming water in between bites is enough to resolve the issue.

If it isn't, you might try adding a touch of whipped cream (the kind in the can is fine) to the peanut butter. This will make it less dense and easier to swallow.

I think maybe you need to slow down and not try to just inhale your food. The stuff I emphasized in those quotes makes me think that you are bolting your food at a mad dash, which is not the best for you.

Even if chewing is not quite the right word in regards to peanut butter, keeping it in your mouth for longer should soften it more. Eating slower also lets you taste your food better.

I realize this is somewhat standard for a teenage male, though.

I was actually going to suggest mixing it with Nutella but that's soooo decadent. :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:
