I've heard that masturbation is a healthy habit, but is there anything risky about not doing it? I've never done it before in my life and I read somewhere that masturbation can prevent prostate cancer.

    Yes.
A study done in Australia found that men who ejaculated at least five times per week were 1/3 less likely to develop prostate cancer, and people who masturbate tend to have lower blood pressures.
It also can help with depression as well as provide other psychological benefits.

A little non-sequitur, but with other animals some use masturbation/self-fellatio as a means of preventing STD's. I saw a nature documentary video that suggested manatees will give themselves oral right after sex to attempt to flush out transmitted diseases. I don't know if any studies have actually proven lower rates of STD's (how effective it is). Even if that theory is not true, it's interesting to see similar behavior in other animals.

I would say some masturbation is unhealthy for your sex life...like if you look at a lot of crazy porn and suddenly it requires a donkey a girl that looks like emma watson and two fighting chickens to get off and you need that stimulation regularly then you may have developed a problem or two

it is. don't ever stop doing it. there's people outthere that try to come up with a lot of nonsense theories about how masturbation is harmful, not doing it will make you more social and a whole lot of mess when in reality, masturbation is harmless and has nothing to do with your anxiety or shyness.

Yeah, as far as I've heard it can be beneficial with depression and help you lower blood pressure.

It's also fairly effective to help you get to sleep.

    ...for men only.

Because post-orgasm, chemicals are released which makes one sleepy. Bear in mind the "exercise" on the journey there may make you more awake if it takes a while.

There's a difference between masturbation and porn. They don't always go together. Masturbation may be healthy; looking at porn is something different.

I know it's healthy to do, but my question is are there any risks associated with not doing it?

Keep in mind that though masturbation can reduce stress, a lack of masturbation doesn't create stress. :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:

No, but there are psychological effects if you feel obligated not to or guilty about even the idea of it. There's no risk to physical harm if you don't masturbate.

If you never masturbate, your body will eventually discharge of that built-up sperm through wet dreams (ejaculating while asleep), so there's no risk of "critical sperm build-up".

Like most things, there's a balance between "enough" and "too much".

Masturbation isn't unhealthy and as the others mentioned, there's evidence that regular sexual activity- alone or with a partner is healthy.

The important thing is to not overdo it. Jacking off is not a replacement for a healthy social life and for adults, it shouldn't be a replacement for a healthy sex life. And you should not do it the point that you cause yourself physical injury.

    For the short term, no.

If you don't have any available partner, it is healthy for both a fantasy life and for sexual release.... but again, moderation is the key.

We actually just discussed masturbation in a class of mine yesterday. To quote my professor "98% of men admitted to having masturbated and the other 2% are lying."

Not only is it perfectly natural, its increases a male's reproductive success by clearing the body of dead sperm cells and making room for newer healthier ones. This may be kind not be important to you, especially being gay and all, but it does explain that their is perfectly natural explanation for why pretty much every man on the planet at least HAS masturbated.

Question, but what if someone doesn't -want- to have a sexual relationship with another person? What if someone prefers to be solo? I just don't see why it couldn't be a healthy sex life in and of itself, if a person simply doesn't have any inclination to be in a sexual relationship with other people.

IDK, I guess it depends on the person?
