Holy crap, I didn't realize how problematic women's clothes were until I walked into Target today. I was getting more sportswear, and I was thinking about getting a pink shirt (the motivation being somewhere between "look at how queer I am" and "I dare you to make an issue out of it"). So of course you can't find pink sportswear unless you go into the women's section, and holy CRAP. I saw a shirt listed as XL that was probably somewhere in between men's SMALL and MEDIUM. I cannot emphasize enough how screwed up it is that a shirt that maybe fits a 13 year old girl constitutes women's XL. And why is it that women's XL = men's S?

  2. yeah...that's just SHIRTS. (also, remember that boobs have to go in there...boobs of all shapes and sizes...)

PANTS are even worse, if you can imagine it. Some places I wear one size and the next store or brand I try it's one to three sizes up or down in number....ridiculous. guys have it pretty easy, to be honest, which is why I tend to wear guys clothes. they're also better quality a lot of times and also made of more comfortable fabrics.

You need to keep a few other things in mind. First of all, women wear tighter clothes than men. Even the casual stuff is tighter than men's clothes. Second, it's going to vary a lot from brand-to-brand and from store-to-store. Sometimes I'm a L and other times I'm a XXL.

Mens clothes are just as bad - I've got size 12 trainers that are too small and size 11s which are too big, XXL T-Shirts that are way too tight, and L's which are way too big, Long legged jeans which are half way up my shins and Medium legged ones with the bottom ripped off from dragging along the ground!

Then again I also have two pairs of trainers which are labelled EUR 46, but one is a UK 11 and the other a UK 12 (US 12 / US 13) - Why can't there be some resemblance of consistency? :bang:

  5. men have broader shoulders than women so womens clothes are generally a lot smaller than mens.

im 20 and only 5ft and can fit in anywhere from age 11-12 to age 13 kids clothes its cheaper for me than buying some womens clothes:stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:

but however, the clothing does vary from shop to shop. some come up small some come up big. so it all just depends

I think everyone above has already explained pretty well why the sizes are so different. But yeah, as a rule women are smaller so of course a medium size women's top is smaller than a medium size men's one.

What I've discovered that I can't even shop in some of the shops because they just don't make clothes for someone my shape. I would have to buy a dress 3 sizes bigger than I would need for my waist, just to fit my boobs in and then it looks like I'm wearing a bin bag or something. And that's just not cool.

  7. Not to hijack the thread, but OMG ME TOO.
Seriously. It's like my butt is too small for my boobs or something?...idk I don't think I LOOK that disproportionate, but it we're judging solely on clothing cuts and sizes, I feel like I freak sometimes.

Clothing sizes in general are just terrible. I just don't get why it would be at all beneficial to have the sizing be different between stores and brands. Generally it's just confusing and frustrating. Not to mention making people FEEL way bigger or smaller than they are and that's not always a good feeling.

Hey, no worries, I don't feel hijacked at all. If anything I was curious to see how cis and transwomen felt about this. My mother was just telling me (as a big person) how they ratchet the sizes down again at Coldwater Creek. I am just kind of horrified at the state of things...

I actually think it's probably just a good thing that the sizing, or actually the cut, is different between different stores and brands. If it was all standard only very few people could fit the clothes properly because people are so different when it comes to shapes and sizes! I've just discovered a store that makes clothes for my shape and it's awesome! And I really like their clothes as well. And I've also learnt which stores to avoid because I have no hope finding anything that would fit me there.

I find it absolutely ridiculous that they still use the S, M and L sizing, when there are so many different shapes and sizes. S is tiny! So they only really need XS for the extra small people. But then L is not really that large, so they need many X:s. And I just find it awful that people have to ask for sizes like "extra extra large" just because someone decided a simplified sizing system would be good.

I find the numbers a lot better, because then people don't have to play with stupid X:s. And even when shopping I never know which size I need because the sizes are not standardised. Depending on the shop I either need S, M or L. And that's just ridiculous.

It is ridiculous. I also find the whole "plus size" thing rather insulting. And that's just me griping about the fact that it's probably the only size category that would ever fit me. Heaven forbid if one is a woman who has to publicly go to the part of the store marked "plus size" to shop for clothes. (It's also more than a little fucked up that men don't have their own part of the store for bigger clothes, but you can definitely point to the women who are in "that" section of the store.)

As a 6'4" 245 Lbs man I often have to shop in "that" section of the store. We just have a better name for it, it is the big and tall section.

What ticks me off is the huge price increase for the larger sized clothes. For example I can where an XL sized shirt, but I need a longer length. The XL Tall shirts are often double the price of an XL shirt. Some times I get lucky and find a sell, but that seems rare.

Ahh the joy of being more than 1 standard deviation from the norm.

I'm about the same size as you - alas here in the UK standard stores seam to stop making suitable clothes for people at about 1.90 (6ft 2in) tall with size 11 feet - the big and tall stores start around 2.00 (6ft 6in) and size 13 feet and thrice the price. Damn annoying when you are 1.94 tall and have size 12 feet - sod all fits properly (mainly length of the t-shirts being way too short, or long enough but with far too much fabric!)

Usually I don't have that big of a problem with men's clothes vs women's clothes. I wear a Women's XL, and could fit in my ex boyfriend's size mediums quite well, but preferred their size large. I just wish our sizes were the same between all brands and styles. Blah. Some jeans I wear are size 14, others are 12, others 16. It's a pain in the butt.

    Do you really?

I probably should not even start talking about bras. But I am finally so happy that there are specialised brands that are just different enough to be perfect for me. And the same goes to clothes. I just can't really find anything that fits me in normal section.

(But why oh why, do they not make the back size 26 for bras?!)

were you shopping in the juniors section or the area for adult women? juniors clothes run smaller. i never have problems finding clothes that fit in juniors, but most of it is either clothing i wouldn't want to wear or is inappropriate given my age. when i shop in adult women's, particularly for clothes to wear to work (business attire), i need the absolute smallest sizes, and sometimes even that is too big.

I agree, it varies a lot more for women than men's clothes. If I was to wear men's clothes (I know because I have an older brother) I'd have to wear somewhere in the junior's size large or possibly medium since I'm a small 18 year old girl. For girl's clothes most of the time I'm just S, but if I go to specialty stores that have merchandise only for petite people like myself I could be a small, medium, or large! As for pants, I just have to memorize what my current pants look like on the hanger so I can guestimate the right size!

I'm glad that as a male, it's so much easier to buy clothes.
EXCEPT, I'm 6'3 with a pretty long torso (and I look stupid because of it), so when I'm buying shirts, I'll wear a M because I'm thinnish but I'll need an XL just for length! Luckily, though, I prefer wearing baggy clothes... But still. That, my friends, is dumb.

Clothes for dancing. Now those are really annoying! I do ballet, so I need to buy leotards and tights and all that crap. I essentially have no butt though, and ridiculously long legs, so all of the tights I buy sag and bunch up. And whenever I find stuff that actually fits, the labels and sizes change so much I can't figure out what size I need to buy. I think everyone should have regulated sizes, but the sizes should be based on numbers or letters(a,b,c etc) not the xs to xxxxxxxl stuff.
