Detox?

Does anybody here know anything about detox? I bought one of those "Nutri-Bullet" things off the TV, if anybody's seen the informercial you know what I'm talking about.... well, I started using it and within 2 days my legs were so heavy that I could barely walk. I contacted a "Holistic Medicine specialist" by E-mail who suggested that my body had gone into detox and that I wasn't healthy enough to tolerate the detox. This was June 19 and I haven't been able to walk since then. Cardiologist, GP, neurologist.... nobody knows what it is.

I also saw something about coconut oil also possibly causing detox. I have never had a good diet or paid much attention to physical health, probably because of the fact that all those 37 years I was in the closet I was so miserable that I didn't care.... now it's different because since I'm not dying over keeping the secret, it's like I dont necessarily want to put all my energy into slow suicide, if you know what I mean.... Thanks, will be very grateful for relevant info....

As I live in NZ I didn't know what the Nutri-bullet was. I first assumed it was some sort of pill you took, but after looking it up it turns out it is a blender.
How have you changed your diet since you bought the blender? I hope you aren't living on just blended up fruit juices? Any problems you have been experiencing will be down to diet changes, not any 'detox' effect - or they will be completely unrelated to your diet.

What in particular do you mean when you say you can't walk properly?
What did your doctor's test you for?

The following is my rant on 'detoxification':
    No.

Just no. Several dozen million years of evolution has made us perfectly able to 'detoxify' ourselves. You won't retain anything that requires any special treatment to remove. If you eat something harmful, then in 99% of cases it will be out of your system within a day or two.
If you are feeling less well than you like, you need to improve your diet, not get dragged into some pseudoscientific nonsense regarding detoxification.

If you have a significant medical problem then it is probably something completely distinct from your diet and you should seek medical advice.

Sorry for being blunt! If alternative medicine worked, then it would just be called medicine!

You absolutely should not undertake a detox in place of getting proper medical advice for any problems you have. Detox diets will almost always result in malnutrition that will make symptoms worse.

Also, avoid coconut oil like the plague. It has no redeeming features - any 'special benefits' people say it has are unfounded. All the studies they cite will inevitably be from some Coconut Oil Foundation that sells it themselves. Almost every western country's health department recommends against consuming it.

I want to high five Ridiculous on his rant against detox, but since there isn't a high five smilie here is a thumbs up instead.

Holistic Medicine is just New Age folk medicine. Stick to science, and don't get sucked into pseudoscience nonsense. Like Ridiculous said if someone is claiming alternative medicine is somehow miraculous and healing, then it wouldn't be alternative anymore, it would just be medicine.

Before doing drastic changes to your diet or exercise routine you should always consult your doctor.

All this being said; I'm unsure of what type of diet you are on or what could be going wrong with your legs. Are they retaining fluid, or something? Do you have a heart condition, such as congestive heart failure? My guess is this is why you were sent to a Cardiologist, as your GP suspected this as a possibility.

Can you give a bit more detail on what is going on with your legs and the type of diet you're doing? Have you changed your diet since it started, and if so have things gotten better or worse since then? Are you consuming something in your diet that you never consumed previously? (Thinking maybe an allergic reaction to something...) If you can give more information, I'm sure it can help in the advice you'll receive.

Ridiculous and Aldrick are right. Detoxing is something the body does on its own except in very severe cases (poisoning, high levels of heavy metal consumption, etc). The detox methods do nothing useful and can be harmful.

Honestly, we don't argue against these things like the "Nutri-Bullet" because there's no harm in drinking vegetable juice as long as the rest of the diet is healthy. It's not going to hurt you, even though there's little science to support some of the claims that these products make. Where we get concerned is when it's recommended that the person not eat a normal diet and instead consume only a "detox" diet of things like lemon juice with pepper, grapefruit juice or watermelon, etc.

In other words, as long as you're eating a well-balanced diet and consuming the recommended number of daily calories, a juicer or vegetable drink isn't going to harm you.

So, if you've been unable to walk for 2 months, it is time to see a neurologist and have some testing done to determine the cause. It is probably not connected with the Nutri-Bullet.

Wow, y'all, that's a lot of varying opinions.... not what I was expecting but very useful. I've already been to my GP and a cardiologist. My GP is completely baffled, and the cardiologist ruled out blockages in the legs.... and it's taken this long to get me to a neurologist.... Also a Cancer specialist on Tuesday, because evidently my white count is all whacked out. Spending all day every day going to doctors because you can't walk and them not knowing what it is SUCKS!!!!

I thought this was about the long awaited Dr. Dre album. I will come back if the thread takes a turn towardas that direction. My theory-he dies before it is ever released. Some singles will be released post-death.
