Why can ulcers be open wounds if they don't bleed?

I think it's like a surgical wound that doesn't heal correctly. It remains open (which of course isn't right) but it doesn't bleed either.

Ulcers are when the mucous membrane of the stomach has holes in it, so the acid eats at the tissue. Think of it like a cavity in your tooth, except in your stomach. Acavity doesn't bleed, but it's definitely an infection of sorts.
