I have to sometimes clear my throat from time to time. I don't know why, but it feels like I have a constant mucus buildup that can be easily removed through clearing of my throat. It's becoming a habit now when I clear my throat for no apparent reason. My lunges are fine since I run on cross country from time to time, and I can swim without much lunge problems. So what's up with my lungs?
I'm not sure if it matters, but I kind of have the same issue and I'm in cross country too. Probably a coincidence, but I'll be watching to see if anyone answers this too.
I don't know what would cause that if you're not just suffering allergies. is that a possibility? I get phlegmy and the only relief I get is from drinking loads of water. You might want to up your liquids intake. Eat some really spicy stuff to clear your sinuses. Avoid milk? I don't know.
Repetitive throat clearing is often partially a physical condition (often allergies, post-nasal drainage or reflux of the stomach into the esophagus) and partially habit. Quite a few people have a habit of clearing their throat before speaking. We're in the midst of ragweed season. You might try an antihistamine to see if that helps alleviate your symptoms. If that doesn't work, have your doctor take a look.
Alright, thanks! I think he did say post-nasal drainage. I saw the doctor recently. He says it's that or asthma. I ran on cross-country today and later I ran, there's a lot more phlegm in my throat.
i'll echo the post-nasal drip thing, it's very common and throat clearing can turn into a habit even after the actual mucus subsides. drink as much water as you can, and as tempting as it may be try not to clear your throat so much because that will irritate it further. you could also gargle some warm salt water to help break up the mucus (if that is indeed the issue).
I used to do that out of habit until my boss pointed it out (in a friendly manner). Once I realized I was doing it, I was able to stop.
I have allergies sometimes and also post nasal drip. I find myself clearing my throat a lot too. Done it for years.
