what do those pains in your sides or neck or whatever mean when you are running?
like... my pulse was going so fast, and my neck started to hurt where the pulses take place.
i didnt even feel like i would pass out or anything, but i had to stop because of the pain.
(which is when i got curious and started writing this...)

do they mean i should stop running?
    or should i keep going?
ive been trying to push myself in working out, but i dont think ive been pushing ALL that hard.

so yeah, my question, what do those pains mean?
does it have something to do with your body needing oxygen or something?
    i dont know.

thanks in advance for any insight you can give on the subject.

Does anything else hurt? How long were you running, and what pace?

    no. nothing else hurt.
i was probably running at a steady pace of 5 on my treadmill. and i had been running for maybe 10-15 minutes. the incline of the treadmill was also on ten.

im not really concerned about it.
just wondering what those pains when you run mean.

It sounds like you may not be running in good form.

It must be lactic acid fermentation!

Well, I get those pains too and like you, I'm not concerned about it.. I just make sure I take breaks and drink water and it goes away. I think it means you need to work out more because you're body isn't really used to hardcore(?) excercise.. make sure before you run that you stretch for atleast 5 minutes so you're flexible enough to build muscle tissue.

What you are describing is what runners call a "stitch".

It's believed to be a spasm of the diaphragm. No one knows exactly what causes it but most of us have had it at one time or another. I've heard some people say that eating too soon before running aggravates it but it doesn't seem to be the actual cause.

There are three things that will usually resolve it:
    1. Try taking deeper breaths. Sometimes if you are exerting yourself and not pacing your breathing, a spasm can occur. Breath more with your stomach muscles to stretch the diaphragm.
    2. Slow down and pace yourself until the cramp goes away
    3. Pause from running until catch your breath and the cramp subsides.

It's harmless otherwise. More of an annoyance than anything.

This makes my sixth year on the Track Team at my school (4 in Jr. High, and 2 at my high school), and I used to have abdominal/rib/side pain, and it felt like I was being stabbed with a scorchingly hot knife.
The best way I've come to describe it.

And since getting our new coach this year, he's had us running every day, and doing several different stretches, and the pain has since subsided.

I think, for me, it was simply a matter of being out of shape.

When running, I breathe through my mouth. Both inhaling, and exhaling.
Even though your supposed to breathe through your nose and out your mouth.
I find my method more effective.
Just make sure you're chewing gum.
    :]
    Or your mouth dries out.

    Yucky.

I'm not sure what the pain would be in your neck... but then you say "or whatever"...

Pains in different locations are going to be caused by different things.

Generally - you need to work up your endurance slowly. Trying to run for long periods of time when you haven't been running at all will likely cause all sorts of problems. Stretching is important - but needs to be done properly for it to be effective. Proper shoes are also important, depending on your feet and arches.

So there are lots of things to consider, and if you're serious about it you might want to consult an expert, or at least someone at a sports store. (Are there 'Running Room' stores in the US? or are they only here in Canada? the staff there are GREAT for offering advice - as they are usually joggers themselves.)
