    Has anyone heard this?

Aside from the obvious, I always thought it didn't make sense. Didn't people used to think that trans people were trans because they liked the same sex, and therefore transitioned to "turn straight"? Is it maybe because some people still view trans people as their birth sexes?

    I don't get it.

I'm thinking the stereotype comes from the birth sex/wanting to turn straight thing (but that would make them straight to begin with). But generally, I have noticed that most trans people I come across are gay, so I'm not really sure what the statistics are.

Nope, completely stupid. One deals with gender; the other with sexuality.

If it comes from anything at all, it comes from the class gay stereotypes of effeminate men and superbutch lesbians...but that implication runs the other way (that gay people are trans). If you know there *is* such a thing as a transperson, I can't imagine why you'd think they were gay (less'n a'course they were).

I find this stereotype ridiculous. I'm a trans man and I'd never touch a woman. Therefore, there's no way I was a lesbian transitioning to be straight, as I never liked girls to begin with

On a survey of transwomen, very roughly one third of the persons was homosexual, one third heterosexual and one third bi, etc...

That's interesting. Compared to the entire population, that's a big percentage of trans women. Do you think it might be due to the smaller population?

That's absurd, not to mention transphobic. Why would someone go through all the trouble of transitioning just to be with someone of the opposite sex? It's certainly not the "easy way out", like some people seem to think.

Gay cis people and straight transgenders relate to men and women on different levels, plus this ignores that transgenders come in all sorts of sexualities.

Not to mention the two are separate things. There is a larger percent of self-identified LGB within the trans population, but whether that's due to biology or being more free to do so is anyone's guess.

It's always most frustrating when it comes from within the queer community.

I know. Can't tell you how many times I've heard "Why don't you just stay a girl if you like boys?"

    ... Because I'm not a girl?

Well, not so long ago, scientists thought that gay men and women were members of the opposite sex trapped in their own bodies, and even in places like Iran today, gay men are either given the choice, or forced to undergo hormones and surgery to live as women rather than stay men.

Except they'll still be men, just presenting as women, and will probably end up suffering some form of reverse dysphoria.

I've heard this but I think it's bullshit. One of my siblings is trans and yes is in a straight relationship but I never got the impression it was some attempt to be straight... sexuality and gender are two different things. Preaching to the choir, though.

    There are many different interpretations...
some even say it might resemble a more natural distribution of preferences...
    its all interpretation...

There were about 3000 participants in the survey.

Huh...I'd thought I'd heard it was proportional to the general population.

    No
    This is from wikipedia:
A survey of roughly 3000 trans women showed ... 23% of them identified as heterosexual, with 31% as bisexual, 29% as lesbian...
