Honestly I'm getting a feeling I'm going to be hated
But, is it okay if I only use the word gay instead of lesbian?
Sure I'm female but I really don't like being called a lesbian it feels uncomfortable and honestly a little to feminine for me I'm unsure why I feel its feminine but I stay away from it. I use gay a lot, problem is people start assuming i'm a guy and I know its because guys use the term gay but wasn't it originally for anyone? So we do people assume suddenly?
Is it wrong for me to use gay now a days or something?

Funny but I totally agree with you about this . I think of myself as gay even though I'm pretty feminine

Yep you can absolutely use gay if it feels more comfortable to you.

Why not? Use whatever label you're comfortable with.

I usually say "gay" instead of "lesbian" anyway. I don't have a problem with that word, "gay" just has less syllables and I'm pretty lazy.

You're not the only one; I've seen other posts about this.

Just go with whatever feels comfortable.

I've actually wondered why gay suddenly at some point became almost exclusively associated with males. the term itself is supposed to apply to a lifestyle in general, not to a specific gender. at least that's how it makes sense to me.

Go with what you're comfortable with.

Nothing wrong with females referring to themselves as gay.

I actually started referring to myself as homosexual instead because it's more clinical and it sounds more exclusive. So call yourself whatever term you'd like!

I'm feminine, but I dunno, I've always called myself gay, fewer syllables easier to blurt out when nervous

Me too, I feel uncomfortable with the term "lesbian". Maybe because I grew up in community where the term is used as derogatory.

But anyway, just go with what you're comfortable with. Nothing wrong with that.

Yeah, the word originally comes from lesbos, the island, where many gay women used to live supposedly, and they've been trying to reclaim that word. So just a fun fact, technically anyone is a lesbian, who comes from that island, regarmless of their genders or sexual orientation :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes: I also prefer the word gay

I don't like the term lesbian either. I use gay for women as well as for men.

That's what I've been called, feminine looking woman who prefers women. It's also led to comments by straight men and women about how surprised they were if they found out I preferred women, because to them I don't "look" like a lesbian.

    Why not?

THANK YOU! Glad i'm not alone. I'm the same, for me it just feels weird and I feel like i'm "branded" when i'm called a lesbian, it's a bit hard to explain what I mean.

I think part of the discomfort also comes from the fact that "lesbian" is a noun and "gay" is an adjective.

You're not a lesbian who likes music and swims fast, you're a person who is female, likes music, swims fast and is gay.

Nothing wrong with calling yourself gay. Call yourself whatever you feel most comfortable with. Personally I prefer to call myself gay. I'm not a fan of using the word lesbian.

Lol! The word "lesbian" has always made me feel some kind of discomfort. I also prefer "gay", I needed to look it up to make sure that I was not calling myself a homosexual male and it gave some type of relief.

gay:"sexually attracted to someone who is the same sex" (Merriam-Webster)
