I know that people are trying to focus less on the actual labels of sexual/ romantic orientations and whatnot, but many (not all) non-LGBTQ+ people aren't very versed in the specifics: the Kinsey scale, demisexuality, the differences between sexual and romantic attraction, etc.

I'd imagine a good amount of LGBTQ+ people don't fit into black and white labels like "lesbian" or "asexual," in other words, there are sometimes "exceptions" in our otherwise "consistent" orientations.

So what I'd like to know is what do you tell people if you're not a Kinsey 6 or 3 (usually the general population's only depictions of being gay or bi respectively)? Do you take the time to tell each person you tell the specifics and exceptions? Do you just say "I'm queer" or "I'm not straight"? Do you just "round" yourself to the closest commonly recognized orientation? What details would you put in/ leave out?

I'm not talking about big coming out moments, like to parents, or the first person you'd tell. Simply, if you were presented with a brief moment in which you had to tell a stranger who you're attracted to, what would you say?

    Lesbian, now.
Couple months ago I'd say "bi, but I prefer girls."

    I'm bisexual.

If it was critical to me that they had a complete picture, I'd say "I'm a Kinsey 4".

If they had just labeled me a lesbian, because they found out I have a female partner, I'd more likely just say, "you don't have enough information to draw that conclusion."

At the moment I'd just say "mostly women." The fact that my gender is still quite uncertain to me means I really can't put a label on my attractions (such as gay/straight/bi/pan), I'm merely floating in the void for the time being.

Usually I just say gay. When I was outted to a few people before I felt ready I said bi. If we're having a heart to heart I'll explain my past and say I'm about a Kinsey 5.

I would say gay if I were to cut to the chase. But more specifically, I'm a Kinsey 5.

I tend to just describe myself as 'pretty gay', haha. Or occasionally a lesbian, although that one brings up a lot of questions in other people when combined with the fact that I am no Kinsey 6 and the fact I don't ID as strictly female.

So I tend to just say I'm mainly pretty gay.

Even though I'm bi, which most people understand, I do like to say things in a slightly roundabout way, eg:
"Let's get something straight; I'm not."
"I have 83 protons... Look at a periodic table!"

Right now I'm not out to everyone but I would say lesbian. Maybe a tiny bit hetroromantic but not much since I've only ever had one guy crush but multiple girl crush's that were much bigger than the guy one.

If I had to to tell, I would say "mostly attracted to femininity" but technical speaking it would be Poly I guess.

I'm biromantic in that I am capable of loving either gender. My sexuality is fluid in that sometimes I feel bisexual, other times more like a lesbian, other times asexual.

I'm bisexual, but it doesn't really come up in conversation very much. People, I'm sure, assume I'm straight, but it's such an assumption, that it isn't even verbalized for me to correct. Mostly, I'm "out" in being outspoken and supportive, and I am more officially out (as in I told them) to all of my close friends.

I waffle between just telling people I'm attracted to people regardless of their gender and just telling people I'm bi. As for gender I usually just explain that I'm not much of a boy and let them stew.
