    Mildly political review of findings

    Original study (in full)

    --

In other news: Academics have confirmed that fire is hot.

So, now that a bunch of academics have confirmed what basically every sensible US (and global) citizen already knew, will US conservatives and liberals (in more realistic terms reactionaries and conservatives, respectively) admit the need for massive reforms?

Well yeah, it's a Democratic Republic. I learned that in 4th grade. I certainly did not need an 1800 page report to tell me that!

I think what is telling is that the interests that get acted on are of those with money and power, both from the founding, until today. The wishes of the majority of the people have never counted for much, compared to the interests of the wealthy few.

I think that's the point; it's not even that. A democratic republic is still democratic, whereas the US is a nominally democratic republic which is factually an ogliarchic republic.

I thought it was a "democratic republic on economic issues, pure democracy on social issues, quasi democratic theocracy" thingy.

As I thoughtfully read this timely report that reads like Plutarch himself wrote it and provides insights that I previously thought only Cicero himself could see. I am reminded of the words of the great English philosopher Derek "Del Boy" Trotter to his brother Rodney (aka Rodders and Dave) -

"And you needed ink to work that out? Stone me Rodney, a Millwall fan could have worked that one out!"

the study does provide evidence that lobby groups weather economic or social affect policy more than the median voter preference .the evidance presented in the study dosnt support the claim that the us is a oligarchy.which is defined by power resting with a small number of people.
nor does the study overcome some very big measurement problems.for example the degree in which the policies measured affect the social and economic landscape of the us.and ignores the fact completely that we have elected officials to make more informed decisions on policy.compared to a system which the public voted on each policy individually.which by the types of measurements used in the study would appear more democratic.than any parliamentary form of democracy.

I'll add that I'm guessing I'd more broadly apply that label to nations around the world - but anyhow, I am of course inclined to agree.

However, the less pessimistic and textbook label is "constitutional republic."

Brilliant, a proclamation from the power elite regarding the elite.
