How do you guys feel about the song Lola by The Kinks? Personally I like it, but what do you guys think besides the band having a great name?
That song always annoyed me. Honestly, most songs I've heard by the Kinks kind of annoy me. I've tried time and again to like them, but even when they try to rock there's something about them that doesn't feel right. From what I've heard of them I can't think of any kind of thing they might do that I wouldn't go to another band first for. Give me Waterloo Sunset and I'm set. That song is flawless. All Day and All of the Night doesn't hurt either, preferably a live version.
I'm of two minds about it. On one hand it's an earworm. On the other it's better than most earworms... but it does cover ninety percent of transwoman stereotypes, so that's not good. And yet, the song refers to Lola as SHE, and the singer (a straight male) falls in love with her even after learning that she is trans. That's pretty remarkable for the time period, when trans people were just thougt of as really gay people.
I really like it only because I grew up listening to that type of music. It humanizes transexuals too and I think is more positive than negative for them.
I'm not too sure: "Well I'm not dumb but I can't understand Why she walked like a woman and talked like a man [...] But I know what I am and I'm glad I'm a man And so is Lola" If someone talked like that to me, I think a decisive, fist-shaped retribution would be justifiable, no matter what else was said in between. NOTE: I do not actually condone violence, I just like the phrase 'fist-shaped retribution'. X3
^Seconded. My first thought was, "At least he used the right pronouns." And it is remarkable, even now. Still wanting to be with someone after finding out he or she is trans is not easy. But it's the pull of the other person, of everything contained within, that transcends everything.
