Let's place bets. Who will be the last to fall?

I'm going to guess North Dakota.

Honestly, it's probably gonna be a dozen states or so states that are gonna be the awarded a communal "last place" title. Something they will undoubtedly cherish. The question is: will the National Guard be sent in?

I also wonder if the Alabama federal judge is gonna do what the Florida federal judge did and issue a clarification order basically threatening them to issue the licenses or face getting sued and having to pay court and legal fees for the plaintiffs. In the end, money talks and bull**** walks.

The problem with their logic is that if that actually is the case that the ruling only applies to the plaintiffs in the case (which it isn't):

    1. The Judge would have clearly said in their ruling that it only applied to the plaintiffs.

    2. It would be the same way Loving v. Virginia only applied to that one couple in federal courts, or the same way a class-action lawsuit only applies to the main plaintiff. It doesn't make any sense.

    3. They either have to follow the federal ruling as there is no stay pending appeal, or risk facing charges or losing their license. And finally:

    4. What does it matter? Literally zero percent of what they say about this case matters, as that case will now set precedent in the state so other judges must either rule the same way, or rule against it and lose embarrassingly on appeal.

I apologized for saying I didn't think they had it in them, rather than that there's anything wrong with the state as a whole.

Yes, provided no appellate court (i.e. either the 11th Circuit or SCOTUS) intervenes. Both courts have previously decided in Florida's case not to issue a stay and let the appeals run their course, so it is expected that this will happen and on February 9, 2015 Hell will freeze over in Alabama (ironically, the 9th circle of Hell is frozen according to Dante's Divine Comedy :lol:slight_smile:.

If/when the emergency appeal reaches the Supreme Court, it will be the first time that's happened after they agreed to grant cert/review the cases where the 6th Circuit ruled against marriage equality. It will be interesting if they grant a stay.

I'm tempted to go down to Alabama, and get re-married, just for the novelty!

I hope the 11th Circuit and the Supreme Court don't stay the decision awaiting appeals. I know that Alabama wanted the distinction of being the last state to ban SSM, but not every redneck state have that distinction. I'm looking forward to June when I'm pretty sure this will become the law of the land nationwide  .

It's not like it would make much of a difference. If the Supreme Court rules in our favor for gay marriage, then it will be legal in all 50 states. If they rule against us, then all the recent court rulings no longer apply. I guess it will all be over with in June... one way or another.

Im confident it'll be legal in all 50 states by June.
