That's probably part of it. I know some people who used to refer to hetero marriages as "marriage" when it was a city hall/civil thing and not the full blown church ceremony deal. So to them any non-religious marriage is not the real thing... thus the air quotes.

Still ignorant at best and offensive at worst.

p.s. yes there are a few religious groups who accept and will perform same-sex marriages but they're not exactly the majority

Well, it would be better if they didn't use quotes but I don't get mad at it. Sure there's the whole equality deal but, to be honest, I'm more interested in the benefits of marriage rather than having it recognized by a bunch of people I don't care about. What real difference does it make if they use quotes or not?

I only like air-quotes when they proove a good point, or when being used for humurous purposes.

On one hand, I find it hilarious because it insinuates that our marriage isn't real and yet the very people who make that claim seem to have issues staying in a "real" marriage. Notice how most of them seem to be in 4 or 5 marriages before they drop dead. On the other hand, it's fucking annoying and I want to judo chop them in the throat.

    Hello,

I don't get why it's called ''gay marriage'', like why can't it just be called ''marriage'' as nobody calls it ''straight marriage''.
