My best friend has a professor who mentioned he was gay during the first day of class.

Good for him. Love how he made it not into a drama.

On one side it's a really inspiring story, on the other I always had the impression that it would be better for teachers to keep their personal life private.

A teacher in our school is gay and while no one is really homophobic there just have been many jokes and speculations about him from students that they would never make about other teachers.

So..I'm not really sure it's an entirely good thing.

It´s best for gay teachers to keep their peronal lives private but heterosexuals don´t have to?

    Good point.
I honestly think that straight teachers should also keep their personal lives out of their jobs.
But thinking about it more I must come to the conclusion that it's impossible, partly because teachers don't do it and partly because students are nosy little shits ( which actually means that it doesn't matter if a teacher comes out to students or not, because somehow they get that info anyway.)

Let me reformulate then: I don't like that these particular students thought they had the right to say certain things about a teacher simply because of his sexuality.

As such examples like this are a positive influence because they encourage different thinking and behavior from students.

On the other hand I still think that personal life and the workplace are two separate things and that teachers should have the right of privacy and not have everyone spreading information about them to their students, that they didn't choose to give their students or the school out of their own volition.

    Better?

I admire this teacher's strength and his rational for comming out.
When I first saw the heading off the article, Teacher comes out at school, I wondered what the intention was.
The teacher's word choice around his sexual orientation, "As a gay man, I know how important it is to have positive role models.", communicates his own orientation and purpose in a way that educates students and supports acceptance.
    Love this!

That's so beautiful. 7889 put it perfectly, most kids struggling with their identity (more broadly than just LGBT-related issues) need a reminder of, or an example of a positive role model. Seeing someone past their adolescence and seemingly well-adjusted to normal life who's totally alright with admitting they're gay without advertising it makes it seem so much more relatable. And for non-LGBT kids, it just goes to show that you can be okay with who you are, live with it, and be happier for it.

That's good, hopefully that teacher will be able to inspire some of their students who may still be in the closet or are questioning
