Does anyone else have the latest version of Ubuntu? I have been trying to update it, and it keeps saying the daeman has died, so wtf? Has anyone else had this problem? I'm seriously contemplating destroying my laptop, I know in the end I wont, but still. :bang:

You're going to have to be a lot more specific than that. I am an Arch Linux user, but I started off on Ubuntu. Why can't you just do this?

    Code:
    sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
Maybe post the output of that or whatever error it is you're getting. There are a lot of daemons that run on Linux systems. (Daemons are passive services that run in the background.)

To be honest I know absolutely nothing about Ubuntu at all. My sister screwed my laptop up, and my exe's dad put Ubuntu on it without really explaining it to me.

Can you please try the command I showed above in your console and send the screen capture of that?

I tired this. Ok I feel way too stupid about this. I type the code in a terminal right? If so, when I do it will not let me type a password. Like it just wont let me type anything else.

-_-....[IMG] <-- This is all I'm getting.

When you use sudo to type in your password, it doesn't show the characters you typed. That's a security feature. It still knows that you typed it. Just type your password and hit enter.

Don't be sorry, I am just trying to follow what you are doing. Do you get this error all the time (as in, you've restarted and still get this?)

    So what about

    Code:
    sudo apt-get full-upgrade
Also, you don't have to send a screen capture, you can just copy paste the console.

EDIT: Sorry, I didn't get that it was your sister's account, not yours...

Yes I do get this message a lot, even after restarting. And it seems I cannot remember the right freaking password.

Well, if you're entering the sudo password wrong, it just tells you the password is wrong. From what it looked like in your screen capture, something was happening, but it wasn't what needed to be happening... Anyway, the sudo password will be the password of the "jessica" account.

See that's what made no sense to me. When using the first thing you told me I put in the password and it did something, this time around with the next thing I enter the same password. And by the way it's not my sister's account lol. It's she would slam her hand down on the laptop itself if the internet was messing up. I didn't know about her doing this until a bit later when she finally told me. My laptop has been through hell because of other people, no one is allowed to touch it now. Anyways this is what happens when I put the second thing you said to do :

    jessica@jessica-laptop:~$ sudo apt-get full-upgrade
    [sudo] password for jessica:
    E: Invalid operation full-upgrade
    jessica@jessica-laptop:~$

I wonder if something is just fucked up in dpkg land (that's the package manager). Let's see if you can get updates manually. If not, please post the errors:

    sudo apt-get update
    sudo apt-get upgrade

Okay, the update was successful. Did you run the upgrades successfully? (Hit y and enter if you haven't already.)

Also, I am seeing that Linux packages are being held back. After this upgrade is successful, please run

    sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

OK then, yeah I went back and hit y. It's doing things right now, taking a bit but finally doing something.

Ok so it got through that process and at the end of it I noticed this:

    Errors were encountered while processing:
    /var/cache/apt/archives/winbind_2%3a3.6.6-3ubuntu5.2_i386.deb
    E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)

how confident are you at installing a new operating system?

Do you need to back up anything?

Too be honest I'm not so sure about the first one. And if anything needs to be saved I have a way of doing that.
