Personally I find Windows 7 to be a sleeker operating system, but frankly it doesn't make all that much of a difference.

I'd look at Lenovos. They make very nice laptops at pretty decent prices.

Toshiba and Asus both make good laptops. Some people like Windows 8 and some people hate it. If you're used to a previous version of Windows, then Windows 8 will definitely take time to get used to, but it's not completely horrible. If the laptop comes with Windows 8 and would cost extra money to downgrade, I don't think that would be worth it.

If it has a fan based cooling system it's probably dusty and clogged.

I'd agree with Luke - Lenovo makes some of the most reliable laptops I've seen. I'd stay away from HP. I had two HP laptops, and they frustrated me so much that I ended up jumping ship altogether and switching to a Mac.

And as far as Windows 7 and 8, I think that at this point most new laptops out there are going to come with Windows 8 on them. If you can, I'd try and get a laptop with a touchscreen, because personally I find that having to use Windows 8 with only a mouse and keyboard can get kind of clunky.

As of yet Microsoft still hasn't developed 8 to run as well as 7. They use 7 at this point to run new software (Like the Xbox one).

Me either, though dirty fingers are already all over my screen and everything else on my laptop :frowning2:

And food crumbs, and everything. It's pretty disgusting, actually.

I have HP and it overheats and shuts down something chronic. In the same boat... looking for something reliable. Definitely not HP this time. Will keep an eye here for advice too.

All laptops you get now will come with Windows 8 unless it's like a computer that's been on clearance for over a year. A lot of companies won't let you choose between the two. Everyone I know that has Windows 8 hates it. I personally don't mind it because i'm a geek that can adapt to software changes easily. Windows 8 is faster than Windows 8 and has better driver support.

While I like HP for desktops (My household has always been strictly HP), their laptops are typically terrible. While they are more affordable and give you better specs for your money, their support is terrible and they overheat easily and have fans that run really loud.

I can't really help you without knowing what screensize you prefer. Some people like 17" while others like 13-14" while some like 15.6. Lenovo and ASUS are typically the best in my opinion.

Thank you - you confirmed my fears about HP Laptops. Overheating and loud fans. Yep that I know very well

I will have to jump ship to another brand. Perhaps Lenovo or ASUS as you suggest.

    Thank You again
