Proof--if we needed it--that Windows needs help to avoid crashing... But perhaps I am a biased Linux user. Here I take the position that in a world that has no walls, why do I need Windows?
Instant classic: Bill Gates demonstrating kernel modules still in testing. I can just about guarantee somebody got yelled at over that one. By the way, I still have yet to kernel panic on any distro I've been on.
Oh I have. I don't think I've worked on a platform yet that hasn't at some point roll over and die. My favorite is VMware ESX. It has a Purple Screen of Death. I thought Bill Gates handled that pretty well. I've given demos before and had things crash in the middle. Not fun at all.
Well, I should have qualified that more. I have had kdm, gdm, or my X session lock up. But I've never had a kernel panic that wasn't the direct result of something stupid I did, like setting /bin/sh as my init and then exitting. Obviously, I got "not syncing: Attempted to kill init!" Well, duh. That's my fault, not a real kernel panic. Unlike Windows kernel panics, which are caused by using hardware. Or using software. Or having it be Wednesday. Or using Windows ME.
