I'm not an expert but laptops aren't made to last that long and if I don't trust the seller I wouldn't buy a refurbished one. If you or your friends are good with computers you can always buy and add additional upgrades if you like, but at least you'd be starting out with something new.

Also, what about the warranties? I say this because I rage-purchased the computer I'm on right now after deciding that spending $800 on a new HP at a store was a better option than dealing with Dell's warranty people reading out of manuals in India to try and deal with my old one.

I wouldn't recommend refurbished computers. Go for the one from Sears.

I definitely disrecommend the Asus from Rakuten. I am not sure what your requirements are, but if they include gaming, I don't think the graphics card is good enough on that. I got a friend an nVidia GeForce GTS 250, and it barely ran Starcraft II on medium settings. He still had frame loss, and this card has a Passmark 3D benchmark 300 points better than the card on that laptop.
