No, not until the very ending, but I don't want to spoil events.
Different actions in-game will either lose or gain approval with members of your party. DA2 is different from DAO in that you can have rival companions/rival romances vs. companions just leaving right away if they don't like you. They also respond differently to your dialogue choices with them.
Isabela and Varric like sarcastic (purple) answers. Isabela likes it when you ask to be paid for a job. Varric is cool with you helping people out.
Merrill and Anders like actions that help mages or people in need, and generally like good (green) answers.
Fenris doesn't want you to baby him when he talks about his slave past, so being too sympathetic with him will get you negative points. He also disapproves if you side with mages and approves if you choose the templar side during various quests. Understandably, it's easier to get rival points with him if you are a mage Hawke.
Carver is a douche and will dislike you for being mean to him, for being wittier than him, or for being kinder than him. Basically, every time your Hawke opens his/her mouth with Carver in the party they'll get +10 rivalry.
Bethany's like Merrill and will approve of mage-siding, goody two shoes dialogue.
If you want to lose approval and be rivals with someone on purpose, just choose the opposite of whatever they prefer.
