Come on ya'll! show your age

What was your first experiences going online?

Mine was BBS' in the days when a node was controlled by a phone line. We would play LORD and Pro Wrestling in a purely ASCII/Text format. Of course my mom lost her **** when she saw the first phone bill. I actually ran a BBS for a while but only like one person would ever connect to it...those were the days

After that I remember getting the first modem and going on Prodigy when it was that hideous blue/yallow screen and searching for pen pals. Fun times

I remember what a revolution it was when AOL came out

And I've been on MSN/Xbox/etc every since

28.8k dialup modem to play Starcraft. No cell phones and my land line was taken up. Parents hated me using it.

This might sound weird but I recall that i liked the days when the 'web' wasn't so user friendly. when you had to find hidden BBS's and nodes. I loved when you had to search for people on other nodes and send them messages...play LORD or wrestling with them

Prodigy was cool too...don't get me wrong I love what the web has become...it's amazing and advanced but I loved those days

I also remember playing Doom online with a friend...wild times

  5. I remember going online on windows 3.1.... lol I'll never forget that screeching sound the modem made.

I don't really remember ... I think the first time was when I was like 8 ... there were two games I played back then called Ultima Online and Asheron's Call, I don't remember which was first though...
I also remember the days when google just started, but I didn't really use it until later in my life

I was about 8 years old and we had just gotten a Gateway with Windows '98. My games were Dig Dug, Space Invaders Galactica, Math Blasters, Where In the World Is Carmen Sandiego?, and of course, Paint. At 12 it was Dollz Mania, CokeMusic.com, lyrics.com, Disney.com (they had awesome games back in the day), funnyvideos.com. At 14 I created my own Myspace. At 15 it was and still is, Facebook.

Back in the mid to late eighties, my engineering student friends introduced me to "electronic boards" if I recall the terminology. I received my first e-mail from a friend around 1992, my first internet experience was with Netscape in 1996 (that's when the world changed).

Ohhh goodness... this brought back memories.

Before we got internet in our home I used to visit a school friend over weekends and together we spend time on MERC chat rooms doing nonsense. And sometimes checking out porn late at night - hee hee hee.

We got our first dail-up connection at home around 2000 - 2001. Did not use it for much back then. It was the days before Google and all these other wonderful online places. But! That was my first exposure to gay porn. Hahaha. Late at night, when my folks was asleep I would go online and search for naked pictures of guys. Now well, I did not have an idea to clear the browser and that forced me to format the whole PC to erase my naughty trail. Yikes.

In 2005 we got ADSL and a small LAN network at home. Back then I first dicovered Wikipedia and Skype. Seriously trashed the data cap that way with silly nonsense. But the ADSL service was soon terminated due to financial issues.

In 2007 I discovered I can connect to the internet via my mobile phone. Made myself bankrupt that way.

In 2008 I got an HTC F.U.N. phone and surfed the web with that. Through that I discovered gay dating sites and started chatting with guys online.

In 2010 I got my first USB HSDPA modem for my tower PC.

In late 2013 we got 3G wi-fi connectivity in the house again.

    Time flies... goodness.

.... and now I got a Samsung Galaxy Fame phone which is a revelation compared to my old Blackberry. In late 2012 I got my first BB and that was also a radical change in the way I connected to the world.

I can't really remember because I was so young lol. I remember that it was in like 1999 back when dial-up internet was a thing and you had to hear that obnoxious beeping every time you logged on.
I also remember around the same time, we had to look up stuff in class for a paper and our teacher told us that you can't type a question into Google because it won't give you the answer. And I tried it and it was true, you didn't get the answer to your question. :roflmao: Nowadays you can ask Google anything and find an answer right away.

    Youtube.

Back in 2007, I went on Youtube and watched the same 3 videos over and over again. I think I've heard Mean Kitty Song more than I've heard my name.

I am old enough to have gone online with a modem and service like CompuServe, but, even though I had a computer by the end of the 80s, I never did that. I think it was something I considered as a future move, after buying a modem, but never got around to it.

First Internet experience was in 1997. I went to a library in a city where I regularly went. I was able to get a terminal (a Macintosh probably running System 7.5). But that was one day only, and it was at least a year or more before I had any sort of regular access.

We still had dial up in 2003. My sister was 13 and since my parents didn't understand the internet very well, she had free access to any website. This lead her to finding some pretty knarly stuff (Happy Tree Friends, occasional porn). This began my sister's hobby of showing me something awful and corrupting my childhood.

I didn't use the internet recreationally until about 2007, and by that time we had actual internet. But our computer had a virus for a long time so it was really slow.

Well my first experience with computers was on one of the first apple computers way back in the day. My first experience with the internet was when one of my brother's friends was connecting to one of the big supercomputers in the early nineties. I think he was hacking in but I don't remember enough about what he was doing nor did I understand at the time, but it may have been a little iffy. My first experience actually going online was not long after that looking up stuff for school. The memory is a little hazy but I still remember the modem noises and just how slow it was. My family has had computers since before I was born. My dad got into them in the late 70s in college.

    Until internet explorer came along.

Which was then dominated by Firefox. Which now is being squashed under chrome.
