    I dunno I think I use windows defender or something. I dont really go on sketchy sites and use add block. Probably not the safest method but I do not want to spend money for it.

    I don't use an.antivirus. I'm the only one who uses my machine and I know how to stay safe. I've never had any infections on my PC when I had protection.

    I use mostly Linux, no need for anti-virus here. But when in Windows I use the free version of Avast.

    I kinda prefer Bitdefender, but that needs Internet connection, and I'm a standard user, because I've been into the habit of installing so many .exes in the past.

    There was a trial program for AVG which made the desktop run extremely slow. Partly because the OS is Windows XP and it's an old model.
    So...I guess I don't use any AV.

    When using decent AV you don't get infections. Not because you "know how to stay safe". That's like saying "I never had a car wreck when I drove safe." Skipping AV is like not wearing seat belts.

    I don't know enough about Windows security to say one way or the other to judge whether antivirus software is needed or not.

    That said, it is possible to get a virus, even with antivirus software installed.

    Secondly, there are people who are computer experts of some sort, and who don't use anti-virus software. There is even at least one person who argues that anti-virus software is best avoided as part of a 6 step outline to better Windows security:

    The argument against AV software here.

    The entire 6 step outline here.

    Note: I think skipping anti-virus is probably a bad idea for many users. It is something you can safely do if and only if you know what you are doing.

    Yes, you need an antivirus program! There's no excuse. Download (carefully) a free program right now such as AVG or Avast! You should get an internet security program, if you're buying stuff online. Hilariously I've found the best antivirus deals online. Don't think I've seen much Avira... so cannot judge yet. Kaspersky is awesome. AVG is improving recently, although it's CPU greedy. McAfee is usually quick and okay for light use, yet very annoying. Norton usually does its job, although it creates false alarms, slows computers down, and is a bitch to remove. You say Avast! is annoying? It's done a good job protecting the computers of others, but I don't personally use it... thus I don't notice many pop-ups.

    My thoughts on this subject change as the programs also evolve. Take into account that my experience is predominantly with Windows XP Professional and Windows 8. Anyway, quick current tier;
    Good = Kaspersky, Malwarebytes, Avast!, AVG
    Acceptable = McAfee, Norton
    Bad = Bit Defender, ZoneAlarm, Panda

    Generally one should not install more than one antivirus program at once. Also I recommend Spybot Search & Destroy for more security. Not for absolute beginners.

    This. Problem is, too many people think they know what they are doing when they don't. I've worked in IT, and I refuse to think I know what I'm doing.

    To those saying that "I have a mac and I don't need antivirus", Macs can still get trojan horses, and the OS only protects against things downloaded. So, if you use an infected thumb drive, or some sort of bittorrent program and the torrent you downloaded is infected?

    Congrats. You now need an AV.

    BitDefender is on my computer, just in case...
    I don't usually use it that much, but since I download a lot of games, music, and other crap, I figure I might as well.
