I've tried to get into fighting games many a time, they seem fun and stuff, but I ten to always suck at them

Anyone got any tips for getting good at them?

The most important factor is the timing and distance of attacks, and the speed and movement of the characters. Focus on understanding exactly when an opponent is vulnerable and the moves and patterns that create gap in defense and attack and you can trounce an opponent less sophisticated than yourself. You could probably be quite boss being such a smarty. :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes: But I'll still whip your ass in Street Fighter.

Get good at blocking, the attacking part is easy. And in the case of mortal kombat, learn the effective special moves, especially ones where you can attack from range, or sub zeros freeze one so you can do a massive combo after.

I disagree with the blocking comment. If you master spacing than you almost never have to block, you just shift out of the attack and counter.

Play with friends casually to get a feel of humans. They aren't the same as computer controlled. Fighting vets is supppppeerrrr aggravating.

I mentor players, and slowly show them how to play better. I might have to scale back, but I despise players that only play at MAXIMUM SETTING all the time, and revel in crushing people that frankly may never play again because of what a COLOSSAL ASSHOLE the winrar is being.

On dead or alive i dodge because its a 3d game but on 2d ones i prefer to block and counter. To each their own i guess. ^.^

For example in Street Fighter games, when you get a feel for the exact distance an attack's actual "hitbox" reaches, you can move to JUST outside it, one twitch forward and counter and you can't miss. That's what I mean with spacing. Combined with timing, then the few blocks you use can be followed up instantly while the opponent can't move or defend. You can also wait for the exact moment in some combos in some games when you can "C-C-C-Combo Break" their asses. Timing. So yes you have a valid strategy I just feel like it is one part of a wider series of options.

Check out tutorials, guides, and online matches, even when you feel you've improved. Practice both with the CPU at increasing difficulty settings, and with human players, since they're nothing alike. Experiment! Creating my own strategies and tactics has opened my eyes to "secrets" that previously alluded me for weeks or months!

To be totally serious, for a moment.

What fighting game you want to play, is going to determine the kind of strategies and techniques, you'll want to focus on. Some games are about blocking and countering, some are about maintaining distance, but going in for quick strikes, and repeat, while some are about just picking cheap characters with cheap, easy button-mashing combos.

I haven't played a fighting game hardcore since DragonBall: Raging Blast 2, for the X-Box 360. Before that, it was Mortal Kombat II. I know I'm showing my age, with that last one, but I cannot deny it. I used to be trollololololol-good at that game, with Kung Lao, Sub-Zero, Kitana, and Shang Tsung.

Actually the game I'm playing IS Mortal Kombat II
I like Scorpion and Raiden as characters but I think the basics still evade me

From what I recall of MK, counter attacking is your strongest strategy with those characters. Wait for your opponent to commit or trick him into attacking and then counter his ass.

    You're kidding...

    *FEELS SURGE OF NOSTALGIA OVERWHELM!*

    Mm.

I tended to play on the arcade. I suppose, before I can begin to give any tips, are you using a controller, or just the keyboard?
