Best racing games

I love racing games. I like both realistic and arcade play styles, although I usually prefer the former. My fave is the Gran Turismo series. DiRT 2 & DiRT 3 were also awesome. This year I completed GRID 2. I've got GRID Autosport, but hardly played it. And there's nothing quite like playing on the phantom level in Wipeout. I've even had fun playing Driver San Francisco.

Some older games include Demolition Racer and Rollcage Stage II on the PS1. Mario Kart Double Dash on the Gamecube. The list is endless.

The 2005 one or the Criterion rip off?

 

Personally I had the best time with NFS: Underground. But Forza is probably the best for realism.

 

If you like nostalgia/retro, try Crash Team Racing - I have an emulated version (I'm rubbish, but the game is great!)

 

On consoles nothing comes anywhere near Gran Turismo. It's the granddaddy of all realistic racing games, and remains the best of them all. Other slightly less realistic games on both consoles and PC are Grid(especially Grid 2), Dirt(Dirt 3 online rally-cross are sheer chaos) ) On PC, you want to look at rFactor or iRacing(rFactor is my choice although it is a bit older. Check out rFactor 2). Assetto Corsa, ProjectCars, and the Simbin series are also worth a look. Even though the Simbin series games are a bit older, they have a huge number of mods and add-ons that you can get, everything from Porsche Carrera Cup cars to V8 Supercars.

 

Hot Pursuit is pretty decent. Original Most Wanted was a bit clunky and the reboot was... not even going to comment.

Not having a console myself, I am quite limited in my knowledge of such games but have heard a lot of good stuff about the whole PGR series.

Some time ago there was a game by the name of Star-Wars Pod Racer. And let me tell you one thing, that game was fantastic! Like, for the time it was made it was groundbreaking. Wish they made a reboot of it.

I agree. I was very close to completing the game, but all my Xbox controllers broke and the game would not allow me to buy another car.

 

Burnout 3. Paradise just didn't feel arcade-y enough to me. And if was to get an Ipod, hot damn the soundtrack for 3 and Revenge would be the first things I got.

 

I used to play "Need for speed: Hot pursuit" a lot on the Wii. That was a pretty decent game. The only thing I really wanted it to have was a free-drive mode though.

 

Oh man, racing games were all I used to play. Some of my favorites:

NFS: Underground, Underground 2, Hot Pursuit, Most Wanted, Carbon, and Carbon OTC.
Forza: 1 and 2 were my favorites
Gran Turismo: 2, 3
Burnout Paradise

Those are my favorite console ones (They are all the Xbox/PS2/PSP versions)

And on PC, NR2003, iRacing, and Test Drive Unlimited 1 and 2 (On Consoles as well.)

If you were looking for a more traditional answer, then it would be Hot Pursuit 2, by virtue of being the only racing game I ever spent any considerable amount of time playing.
