I recently purchased a Wii U so I could play games from the Wii I missed as well as some games recently released on the Wii U that had my interest. And this is my first go-round with a Nintendo home console.

    Any recommendations for either console?

I personally wasn't a huge Wii fan (I enjoyed Twilight Princess, Mario Galaxy, Sonic colors, etc) but I really enjoy the Wii U

It really depends on your taste honestly. I own the following games: New Super Mario Bros U, Zelda Windwaker (HD), Mario Kart 8 (Really fun), Super Smash Bros U, Hyrule Warriors, Super Mario 3D World, Sonic lost world

If this is your first Nintendo console, you're in for a fucking treat.

    Wii U:

    Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate
    Super Smash Bros Wii U
    Super Mario 3D World
    Mario Kart 8
    Wonderful 101
    Bayonetta 2
    Pikmin 3
Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker HD
    Hyrule Warriors
    Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze

    Wii:

    Zelda, Twilight Princess
    Zelda, Skyward Sword
    Super Mario Galaxy 1 & 2
    Mario Kart Wii
Metroid Prime 3, or the Metroid Prime collection
    Super Smash Bros Brawl
Xenoblade motherfucking Chronicles, holy shit you have to have that game.
    Donkey Kong Country Returns

To say nothing about the laundry list of classic old school Nintendo games available for download that you NEED TO HAVE AND QUIT YOUR JOB TO PLAY ALL THE TIME.

Did I mention Monster Hunter 3?

Except for the obvious ones (read, Nintendo titles.) there's "Wonderful 101" and "Monster Hunter 3" for Wii U and "MadWorld" for Wii.

Honestly you didn't miss much with the Wii. The games to get for that console are basically the Nintendo titles, the rest of the games for the console are basically rubbish since it was a rubbish console from the start.

If you like action games, Bayonetta 2 is fantastic from start to finish. Easily the best Wii U game I've played, and it comes bundled with the first one too!

For Wii U, my ultimate recommendation is Pikmin 3. You don't need to have played the other games to get how this one works.

For Wii the best game I can recommend is The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword. So much fun!

With these two alone I would say you are in for some of the best gaming days you've had in a few years

Xenoblade Chronicles is a must play! It's seriously the best game I've ever played.

However, you can get the first 2 on the Wii for a good price too. So if you are interested, you may want to get those too.

To say something that wasn't already said, Red Steel 2 (ignore the first one), No More Heroes, and No More Heroes 2. These are some of best games on the Wii that were not made by Nintendo. Actually Red Steel 2 is one of my favorite games on the system period. It is sad that it is so underlooked. But that is because the first one is so infamously bad.

I liked Okami and Muramasa: The Demon Blade. Super Paper Mario was also really good.

    Wii
    -Metroid Prime Trilogy
    -Super Mario Galaxy
    -Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn
    -Dokapon Kingdom
    -Xenoblade Chronicles
-Zelda: Twilight Princess (I prefer the Gamecube version, but since you have a Wii U, the Wii version is fine)
    -Zelda: Skyward Sword
    -Mario Kart Wii

    Wii U
    -Super Smash Bros.
    -Mario Kart 8
    -Super Mario 3D World
    -Zelda: Wind Waker HD

There aren't that many games that I'm interested in on the Wii U yet, unfortunately, but some more interesting games are starting to come out.

I thought about recomending that one. It's actually one of my favorite games of all time. But there are 2 reasons I didn't...

It is a sequal to a GameCube game. So I'm not sure how enjoyable it would really be without the first part of the story. They are extremely closely connected.

Second: it is very expensive. But if you can find it cheap enough somehow it may be worth checking out.

I know right, it's awesome! Another game I'd recommend then would be The Wonderful 101. While I haven't played it yet, it was made by the same developer and a lot of people who like Bayonetta seem to enjoy it. There is a demo on the eshop, but I've heard it doesn't do justice to the full game, so keep that in my mind if you do try it. Have fun with your new Wii U.

If you could ever find it, Xenoblade Chronicles is one of the BEST games I've ever played.

Aside from that, Earthbound is available on Virtual Console and it is hands-down my favorite game ever.

    Wii U:
    SM4SH BROS
    Super Mario 3D World
    Child of Light
    Wonderful 101
    Bayonetta 2
    Mario Kart 8
    Pikmin 3
    Windwaker HD
    Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate

    Wii:
    Okami
    Super Mario Galaxy 1 + 2
    Pikmin 1 + 2
    LOZ: Skyward Sword
    New Super Mario Bros Wii
    Kirby's Epic Yarn
    Mad World
    No More Heroes 1 + 2

...and lots of games on Virtual Console!
