As the title says, what is your favorite genre of video games? It would be awesome if you could also provide some insight as to why this genre is your favorite. Personally I love RPG's, I love everything about building my own character with abilities of my own choosing. Being able to make your own choices that effect the story is also a huge plus for me. RPG's also have very high replay value in my eyes with countless different direction that you can take the story. But that's just my personal preference.

Thriller Games or Survival Horror...probably comes from my love of horror movies, books, and comics. That edge of your seat kinda moment, will I get out alive?!

Alan Wake, Resident Evil re-make and 4, and Silent Hill 2 are great examples the types of games I'm talking about.

RPGs! Then tend to have deeper, more expansive stories. I particularly like JRPGs.

    RPG's

And I notice platformers are not on here, which are also my favorite as I grew up with them

    Action-Adventure is my favourite genre.

It grabs the parts of action games that make it fun (guns, explosions, etc.) and the exploration, puzzle-solving, and great stories of adventure games, and throws them into one hell of a good time.

    Yes.

Command & Conquer, Rise of Nations, and various World War II ones.

The only one I even really play anymore is Red Alert 2, but I do enjoy them.

Eeeeh I didn't vote because the genre of the game has no bearing on my purchase decision. I what look for in games is a combination of, at least two, out of three things: good story, good art-direction and good game design.

Simply put, to catch my interest a game has to be:

    • Fun & Pretty
    • Pretty & Engaging
    • Engaging & Fun
    • All of the above

If a game has one of this, I couldn't care less about the genre. I'll get into it if the games are worth the effort.

    I don't really have a favorite genre, I think.

Platformers weren't an option, so I chose RPG. I like all genres, but I find platformers an extreme amount of fun to perfect and be able to run through quickly. They're easy to play mindlessly and always have catchy music. I also really enjoy the stories and customization of RPGs.

RPG. I tend to enjoy the battles more than the story. Although I agree about re-playability. I call that value for money. I'm also fond of Fighting games and Racing games.

I love Medieval II: Total War. Especially the Teutonic Campaign. It's easy to guess what it's about. The battles are in real time, and the strategy is turn-based. With that birdseye view; I feel like a god, looking over hundreds of enemy corpses around the battlefield and sometimes laughing. Nothing beats spending an afternoon converting Europe to Catholicism. Cavalry might be overpowered in those games... no real complaints because I use it to my advantage. I also enjoyed Age of Empires II.

Although you do raise some interesting questions. Maybe there is an idea for a thread in there somewhere. For example, I have trouble understanding how some folks enjoy video games about golf. Good for them though. Perhaps they just really love golf!

I am torn among RPG, Shooting, and Fighting. I love them all. But I voted for RPG just because of Pokemon.

RPG. I grew up playing Final Fantasy then shifted to more action-packed and strategic ones like Dark Souls and Dragon Age.

RPGs because of Morrowind, Mass Effect, and Knights of the Old Republic. It's clear this is a popular choice, not only from the poll, but because every game looking to add depth adds RPG elements like customizable inventories and advancing character skills. And to that bleeding effect I say... welcome!

    I like RPGs and MMOs.

Not all RPGs or MMOs tho'. I have very limited selection on my likes. I generally like games that gives me enough creative room to wiggle. I love to think about builds... usually awkward ones. With my short attention span and altisis on MMOs I tend to use them as scrap books... Superhero ones especially.

I love RPGs, with anything ranging from Pokémon to Zelda. I love the sense of adventure you feel when playing RPGs.

I don't think I have any favorites, but I do have ones that I dislike, such as Sports and RPG's.

I voted RTS and I loved Red alert 2. I have recently been playing Empire Earth again, I used to love that game.

I like RPG and shooter games a lot too.
