I've basically stopped buying new games and wait about a year or so when they drop in price. I've also mainly moved over to PC since the games typically drop in price faster and go lower.

I used to love my console games but it just got too expensive.

What do you guys think do you still buy the $70-80 games new? Or do you wait? Or do you just not play at all anymore?

I've yet to encounter a game that costs more than 60.

So I just checked a US site and it shows them being sold at $60US still :/. It used to be that way here but I've now seen some as high as $80CND...

Our dollar is at 0.80-0.85US but that doesn't really make up the difference.

Each new generation in console makes the games cost £10 more in my country so I just wait and see if my friends play it or what the reviews are.
I also moved over to PC because it's way easier to use and is like a third of the cost of a console game. Plus I can do things in the background.
I also just play a game for ages (like weeks) until I get bored and either go back to an old game or just get a new game.

Games tend to be more expensive in some countries. I think Australia is the worst.

Anyways, when it comes to PC games, most games, even new ones, can be found really cheap if you know where to look. I bought Evolve and GTAV new for about 40USD by buying it from the right site at the right time and both of these were pre-purchases. I also know you can do some VPN magic with some services, like Origin, to set your location to a country with lower prices, like Mexico. I know you could buy Dragon Age: Inquisition that way for around 30USD.

Really, video games are only expensive in places where they think they can get away with it. Go for the smaller dedicated distributors instead.

It's more difficult with console games, because there's a lot more control involved here. You can only find digital copies on the console's own digital store and they charge a lot on there.

In Brazil at least, games are really, really overpriced i think, especially considering we receive less money for our work than in other countries.

A Brazilian friend tells me that a large reason to that is because piracy is so ridiculously rampant in Brazil that game companies need to overcharge something ridiculous just to break even.

The way I see it is, a game's not worth my time unless the number of hours I'll end up playing it exceeds the number of dollars I spend on it.

It's the opposite. Piracy is common here because the prices are really really high, especially because there is low incentive to the game market here and the taxes for eletronics are way too high. Some of my friends simply don't have money to buy games, except peraphs for 1 game a year.

For example, in 2013, Xbox was costing R$ 2.200 here. The minimum wage (per month) is around R$ 788.

According to this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MgmDOr2nxfA (it is a Brazilian guy who lives in Canada), it costed around $500 there (in 2013, i think that would be around R$1.000, so, it's more or less half the price we get here).

The video also mentioned that, where he lived, the minimum wage was around 1.600 dollars (per month).

I'm trusting this video as a source to say this, so, if there is someone here that can correct me, it would be appreciated. However, even if i'm wrong about the minimum wage, it is still clear that we pay the double of the price of the videogame here.

More recently, the PS4 was released for R$ 4.000 here. Checking the price now (03/05/2015), i see this:

    http://www.amazon.com/PlayStation-4..._0?s=videogames&ie=UTF8&qid=1430687000&sr=1-1

PS4 around 400 dollars (that's like 1.200 reais here, nowadays).

    In Wallmart Brasil:

    Consoles: Playstation 4: Games - Walmart.com

PS4 around 2.000 reais. That's 800 reais of difference! Considering that we receive less money on our jobs, remember that 800 reais is a really, really considerable amount of money, especially because some people live with that amount of money, because it is the minimum wage here!

Eighty bucks for a game is ridiculous. But I still but them.

I don't really have the money, so I wait, not because I want to, but because I have to.

Yeah, Brazil sure isn't a place to be a gamer. I think your best bet if you're Brazilian is to get a PC, use only digital distributors and use VPN tricks to change your location, because I know at least Steam will raise prices in Brazil or outright not sell them there.

For the rest of you, I recommend Green Man Gaming. They're cheaper than Steam and if you shop there for a bit and register, they start sending you a bunch of vouchers that shave the prices off even more. To top it off, they make Steam sales look like daylight robbery. At one point at a GMG sale, I bought a pack that included every single X-COM game for ten dollars. We're talking the whole package here; the classic X-COM games, X-COM: Enemy Unknown along with its expansion Enemy Within and X-COM: The Bureau. For ten bucks.

For when this was posted it's probably accurate. Minimum wage here is somewhere between $1,700-1,900/mo depending on the province / territory. And I'm fairly certain that the price for a console is still true.

The amount they are asking for in Brazil is ridiculously high. Especially considering your wages which are despicable.

I was also looking at Australia and it was $100AUS for a new game. It seems like we get charged a lot if we don't live in the US...

in syria all games are sold with 1$ or 2$ as they are all copies of cracked games with different cracks and keygens
though still some stores sell the games that can be cracked but cant access the online gameplay and they like pay 10$ or 25$ for any new game that is original not cracked and new so you can play it online without problems
    though thats for the pc
xpox 360 games are the cheapest here 0.5$ is the price of any any game whatever its and any xpox 360 is cracked to be played online with any game and disable any connection with microsoft so your profile wont get banned
ps2 games are even cheaper and also every ps2 that is sold is modded also
ps3 somewhat the same but hard to mod as i heard so not all ps3 are modded you have to ask him to mod it for you if its not as for games of ps3 the highest they can go up to is like 7$ or so because its blu-ray
btw we dont sell with dollars but i converted the S.P to $

I suppose Europe/US are bigger markets with more competition. Only thing I can think of that would explain the price difference.

They really are, especially for the newer consoles (PS4 & Xboxone)... Most new games cost like £50 which is way too much. I remember when I was younger and new games used to cost like £25 on the PS2 lol... Even the consoles themselves cost way too much. I think it's like £320 for a PS4, when I first got a PS2 it was like £200 and my mum was like that is too much, so I would like to see what she would say if I was to ask her to buy me a PS4 lol.

Thanks a lot Lazuri. I usually buy games at Steam (i only play on PC), when they give discounts, but my wallet feels the pain :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:
We have a saying in here, "eu sou brasileiro, e não desisto nunca" (i am a brazilian, and i never give up). Gaming is hard here, nowadays, but we still stand! :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:

    Isn't it?

I blame our government. As i said, there is no incentive for gaming here, and they put lots and lots of taxes in eletronics in general.

Steam summer sale is coming up...AAA games for $5 to $10, cheap DLCs, lots of indies on sale. The only two games I bought for full price at launch over the past year or so were Dragon Age Inquisition and South Park.
