The announced FF7 remake? Yay or nay?

So it was announced that FF7 would be getting a PS4 remake (news somehow slipping me by all summer).

I'm really not sure what to make of this news.

Final Fantasy 7 was a great game (although not my favourite in the series), and is obviously massively popular amongst fans. I'm wondering though how much of the love for the original is nostalgic love, and tied to the game being brilliant at the time (the thrill of playing such an expansive and involving game for the first time, in an age where such "3D" gaming was still in it's infancy and it was really quite innovative).

Now we have so many visually impressive games with epic storylines, would a remake of FF7 risk being middling? And would this damage the reputation and love for the original? (Taking away the shine as it were, by "overanylysing" the original to remake it).

To be fair it is said the new game will feature a new story (whether that is an entirely new story or just embellishments is unknown), but I'm just wondering whether the original is a strong enough base? From memory it is yes, but maybe that is a case of rose tinted glasses.

There is one positive to come out of this though: no more weird looking knees!

I think as a concept, the FFVII remake could be amazing. I'm definitely very excited. Whilst IX is my favourite FF, VII is an excellent entry into the series and I can't wait to see what this project brings. My only hope in regards to new content is that the Crisis Core story content is shown in some kind of Zack sidequest chain. It'd be a really cool addition.

Yeah, I think Square Enix are probably going to treat this with kid-gloves so not to cause fan outrage so I am sure whatever is produced will be one of their best efforts.

I do kind of wonder how it will sit with FFXV, will the remake completely outshadow it (it is already probably receiving more hype), or is it going to be released a good while after? I am looking forward to FFXV more personally, something a bit fresh and better than FF13 which seemed rubbish from my brief encounters (why they invested in sequels for that instalment i don't know) - and people trash the beautiful 12!

Corrected for you: "Whilst IX is the greatest FF".

Still, I'm not sure whether I'd want it remade or not (which I presume was the dilemma facing FF7 fans). Whilst I'd love to see the characters again, I wouldn't want the risk, plus somehow I'm not quite sure the world was "big" enough to be expanded on. Strange as it sounds it was a "cosy" game, it worked in its quaintness. FF7 on the other-hand has a bit more "realism" and darkness which I think is easier to play on and make "open world".

A HD upscale to bring it inline with the original resolution would be lovely though. Again, they give us FFX/FFX-2 HD remakes for Vita, PS3 AND PS4 yet cannot even give us an FFIX one? Grrrrrr! :tantrum:

They're adding a new story? Now I'm a little concerned...

I'm fine with the remake. I enjoyed VII, but it never captivated me like it did others. For me, VI was the superior entry. So seeing how this turns out will be interesting, especially since the graphics in VII, particularly when roaming around places with those far off camera angles, have not aged well.

Also, I'm curious how the Golden Saucer mini-games will look and operate.

I'm interested in it. There's pretty much no way I'm playing through janky old FF7 anyways...

Ikr? Call me vain, but a proper remake is the only way I'll ever play FF7. The original is too ugly for me to stomach.

    Yay.

    Of course, I can't play it because I don't have a PS4.

Pff, don't buy into Sony's marketing ploy. It's gonna come first to PS4, but I assure you there's no way this is gonna be a permanent exclusive. I expect at least a PC port no more than a few months after the PS4 release, if not sooner (an Xbone port is not off the table either).

Was my first ff game  nots going to expect too much simply because i didnt think its fair to the remake i loved this game so much it will be so hard for a remake to match it

Well I for one will definitely not be getting it, Not soon after it's release, at least. I might eatch some stuff on it on youtube to revel in itms graphical marvel, but it's still the same game, and I haven't even finished the original yet, sure mainly because I just haven't gotten round to it, but still, it's the same game with the same plot and the same characters. If I had played this when it came out and never since, yeah, I'd get it because it's a game that I enjoy and it'd be nice to play again and see it all perty like, but because it's still new to me, what's the point.

I am almost 100% sure its not going to be the same think they have said they are going to stay true to the original but with a different story i believe

I HATED the Golden Saucer bit. I like the idea of this playground for the rich being built out of a exploited desolate town in the desert (kind of like Vegas!) but the way it was executed was just terrible.

The games were boring, the set was just silly (an awfully rendered rollercoaster, a dojo and a haunted house? What?!). It was just stupid. When you have a quite serious theme (with the whole Shinra thing) it just stuck out like a sore thumb. Again going back to 9, the side quest "games" were either better fitting/more enjoyable (like the Auction or Chocobo hunting which was epic) or were silly but subtly implemented (the street chase or hippo Skipping game).

I'm hoping GS is omitted or greatly improved (maybe it being shown as just a casino, or a fully fledged themepark - taking one theme and delivering it).

Sony and Square have parted ways now haven't they? So I guess its possible.

Although I'm guessing Square still try to keep Sony sweet, they probably have a exclusivity clause they can both benefit from (Square getting great promotion of the game, Sony getting an opportunity to shift consoles). Plus you have the strong historical link between FF and Playstation in peoples minds*.

    I'm guessing:
    PS4 for a year
    PC release after
Maybe a XBoxOne port after a year or two, although by then I'd imagine appetite might have died down and Square would be on to promoting the next FF game (FF16 or 17 probably by then)

*Of course they released FF3 and FF4 on the DS, but I think that was more down to it working best. By that point the PS3 was out, and realistically a pixellated "2D" game like that would never have marketed well on a next gen console played on a big screen - it had to be handheld and the DS was just the most convenient port.

I liked the original, but hated the truly awful 3D graphics, so unless the redone graphics are equally terrible (can't stand the style of the iOS & PC remakes of the older games and would rather play the original amorphous blob versions) I'll most likely pick it up.

6 is still my series favorite and I'm probably one of the few who liked 8 better than 7, but I'll most likely end up getting it regardless.

I'm stoked but I really hope it hits PC. I have no plans to buy a PS4.

When I saw this title I thought it meant Fast and Furious 7, I internally sighed until I realised what it was

Don't have a PS4, but I'm all aboard the hype train. I've been waiting for this for a while. Watching my brother play FFVII was one of my fondest childhood memories, so I've got a lot of nostalgia with it. Perhaps my views are tinted, but I'm still gonna be optimistic unless something totally drives me away from it. So, hype train for me.
