So I've been off a little bit because I was introduced very un-subtly by family and friends to a game you may or may not have heard called Undertale. You may have taken a beeline straight into this thread because you know the game. I noticed there is no Undertale thread, and therefore have created this one.

Now, being a Homestuck, I know of other work that Toby Fox has done, and I also know he wrote Megalovania for a Halloween ROM hack of Earthbound, which seems to get as much, if not even more glowing praise than Undertale. Therefore, this thread is dedicated to Undertale and other works that Toby Fox has done. But mostly Undertale.

Just a note: PLEASE put spoilers in spoiler tags. If you don't know how to do that, enter the following without the spaces:

Basically, put the spoiling content between the two sets of brackets.

Also, please keep the content to CoC. We don't want Frisk porn or anything else that's not PG-13.

Now, let our discussion of the Underground begin

I started Undertale a few days ago. So far it looks like its popularity is justified. The story's off to a good start, and the characters are interesting. It has a ton of quotable lines.

My only criticism is that the ruins had way too many monsters. I couldn't get from one room to the next without having to deal with an encounter. I hope it isn't like this throughout the game, but even so, I expect it'll be more than worth it.

The encounter rate in the Ruins is the highest in the game. Don't worry ... the rest of the game actually has a remarkably low encounter rate. I found myself wishing for more battles, actually. A first for an RPG.

Anyway, about Toby "Radiation" Fox's other work: the Halloween Hack is pretty fun, I played it a few years ago since I like Earthbound. However the difficulty is fairly punishing! And it's nowhere close to how good Undertale is. What's neat to see though, is the development of Toby's musical talent. Over the course of his contribution to Homestuck he's made some pretty great songs, but Undertale is currently the best example of his skill composing game songs. Also, if you've ever heard of Chrono Trigger, Toby Fox made a song for the optional "super Lavos" boss in the DS edition which is really good too.

I can't say enough good things about Undertale. It rocketed its way up into my Top 10 games list and I honestly think it's pushing Top 5 material too. As far as the characters go, no contest they are my favorite in any game. Undyne is so epic. Mettaton is as hilarious as he is gorgeous. Burgerpants had me heart and soul from the moment he said "SO, I wanted to be an ACTOR." The only complaint I have with the game is that in the Ruins there is a monster that looks too much like Mike Wazowski from Monsters Inc.

I could go on about Undertale 'til the end of time. I'll probably end up dumping more of my unadulterated adoration for this game here later.

I bought Undertale a few days ago, and I have to say I'm really enjoying it so far! I made the mistake of enabling hard mode on my first run and getting absolutely destroyed (thanks to a lot of tumblr posts with Undertale art) but I restarted and now I'm getting into the groove of it. I just met Sans and Papyrus, and I'm already loving them.

From what I've read, it's basically a totally different game to Earthbound. Is this true? I'm asking because I want to play Earthbound, but I'm not sure if I want to play that before playing the Halloween Hack.

Definitely. A great example for those that don't know, Megalovania was created for the aforementioned Halloween ROM hack of Earthbound. Radiation then used it in his compositions for Homestuck, and Andrew Hussie put it in : Wake (one of the Homestuck flash animation pages). And then he practically reconstructed it for Undertale.

The Halloween Hack is WAY shorter than Earthbound. You want to play Earthbound, I think, or there's not much of a point to playing the Halloween Hack. It's like an alternate ending scenario to the original Earthbound, kind of...

You should definitely play Earthbound and Mother 3, those games definitely had an impact on Undertale; the games are similar in their silly comedy and unique characters and emotional stories. Mother 3 and Earthbound are definitely my favorite games of all time and I hold them dear to my heart, and I'm sure by the time I finish Undertale it's be the same.

If you like metal and you like Undertale, there is so much good Undertale metal on youtube.

I think it should have its own genre: Undermetal

    Finished my pacifist route.

I think I'm gonna take a break from Undertale before I go on a no-mercy (aka genocide) route.

Funny enough I attempted mine yesterday, and I didn't do it like I really should have, so Sans argued that it was all self-defense. So I ended up getting a neutral ending, instead of having a bad time.

So all in all, I'm not re-killing Papyrus to do that. I'll just watch other people's playthroughs of it, and by "Other people" I mean Vinesauce's Joel.

I don't think I've ever been as addicted to a song as I am to Death by Glamour.

I'm still fighting Mettaton EX to this day 0_0

The guys I'm watching quit playing it to focus on other games, and I don't wanna cheat on them with some generic, less funny LPer, but I need more of this game in my life already..

Are you in the same boat as me, lost the guts to keep playing after the pacifist end? That's why I've been watching constant LPs of it wherever I can find on youtube:eusa_doh:

Trying my hand at a genocide run; i find it more tedious than anything, since I don't want to pass any "points of no return", and I've always hated grinding. I intend to immediately stop and restart once I defeat the final boss of genocide...provided I ever do.
