Noted law professor and unhinged dude Eric Posner, wants to make it illegal to visit ISIS websites. I find this to be so stupid that it raises questions about his qualifications to teach law.

Answering the most obviously damning argument to his position, he states,

"One worry about such a law is that it would discourage legitimate ISIS-related research by journalists, academics, private security agencies, and the like. But the law could contain broad exemptions for people who can show that they have a legitimate interest in viewing ISIS websites. Press credentials, a track record of legitimate public commentary on blogs and elsewhere, academic affiliations, employment in a security agency, and the like would serve as adequate proof."

This answer is nowhere close to good enough. One should not have to have press credentials, maintain a political blog for multiple years, work for a security agency, or be a graduate student at a university to have a legitimate interest in looking at ISIS-related information. Other people, such as activists, high school students, and informal security researchers may want to look at this information. It is not as if they are going to turn to ISIS.

Hell, Anonymous wants to DoS ISIS...

Information wants to be free, so do people.

But it's all for your own good, you know... Same old, same old.

If there is a law that could lower the number of ISIS recruits, even by a bit, I am willing to give up a bit of my freedom for the safety of many people from terrorist attacks. Freedom isn't always worth it. ISIS isn't about to publicly share any of their secrets on their websites.

The fallacy here is this isn't your freedom to give. This is other people's freedom you're willing to give.

I doubt that making it illegal will lower the number of IS recruits. A particularly favourite quote of mine: Those that sacrifice Liberty for security deserve neither.

Because making drugs super illegal really brought their use down. Banning things is not the answer.

Prohibition has quite the opposite effect : It creates more addicts, a black market, etc.
There is nothing like looking back at the 20s...

It could turn even nastier than it is now, but when the shit hits the fan the guilty ones won't be found on battlefields dying for the good old country, or wearing police uniforms, you know. It has been like this since men are men. We are all pawns on this massive chess game, and they are the ones who move the pieces.

Everytime I look up to the sky I see many dark clouds, and they keep coming. With brilliant ideas like turning access to information into something illegal, they are giving them arguments and reasons to lure and seduce more people. They will want to read about it even more, and when they get there they'll be greeted by folks that will start with 'If your country is so free, why do they ban you the access to information? Well, I'll tell you a few things about your country...'

I see so many dark clouds, you know, and right now I'm not even wearing my fedora...

In case it wasn't totally clear over text, I was being sarcastic. Our country's "War on Drugs" has created global-scale problems that have made things orders of magnitude worse than it ever would have gotten if we considered drug abuse a health issue rather than a criminal one.

Forgot to add yes, I do agree, thought the picture would do the job. I just couldn't resist, it's too good... I wonder if we'll ever see the word free access to information instead of beer.

It seems better to keep these sites accessible so authorities can investigate them.
