Should I update my Samsung Galaxy S3 ??

Hi all
Can anyone recommend or not to update the galaxy s3 software? I have the default version of 4.1.2 and never updated to higher versions due to people say there were problems and battery stuff etc etc ... so I wonder if anyone use a stable android version that I should use? or just update to the latest which is stable and wont make my phone explode?
