Default PSN Network Hacked - Our Info at Risk

Quote:
The Sony PlayStation Network disaster had made into the mainstream news cycle. Once it became less about gaming and more about people's real-life money and their real life identities, stuff as they say, got serious. We all know that the PSN was compromised, but you may not know just how compromised you are. PlayStation Blog has supplied an informative FAQ that will answer some (not all) of your questions. Hopefully they will keep it up to date as more information comes to light.

In "That didn't take long" news, lawsuits are popping up against Sony. IGN reports that a California-based firm has brought a class action lawsuit against multi-national corporation. The lawsuit alleges Sony "failed to take reasonable care to protect, encrypt, and secure the private and sensitive data." IGN has a PDF of the complaint here. Does this mean we'll start seeing those commercials on TV asking if we were victims of the PSN outage, like when prescription drugs are recalled, or hip replacements go bad? Yes. Yes it does.
Hard to believe huh? Who else is effected by this? I'm sure many of you.

I'm kinda surprised more people aren't concerned about this. I mean it's effected 77 million people and I'm sure MANY are members. I mean 77 million people? You can't tell me only myself, mugetsu and the other 36 people who have viewed it are the only ones.

Well there's not much we can do about it, honestly. So it's more of an "oh well" kinda thing.

The worst they know of me is where I live. Not that I will be living here much longer anyway. I am just pissed that I can't properly log in to some of my games as the network was shut down last week.

While it sucks, i think it's silly that people get mad at Sony. It's like going:

"GRR YOU GOT OUTSMARTED?!?! IMA SUE YOU FOR NOT BEING SMARTER THAN EVERYONE!"

By that I mean, someone outsmarted them and was able to hack into it. Nothing is completely hack proof forever. I mean, I get why people would be upset, but Sony can't make magic happen.

lol this is a bit late but yeah I've been following this since I'm part of rather loose group of PS3 users.(I don't wanna use the term clan because it's very unorganized XD)

What I'm wondering how they are gonna give back to + subscribers. Ironically I had just gotten the service about 3 days before this happened. I hope they give add the days we lost to our subscription back.

I was affected by this. I already put my bank's number on speed dial just in case I see some unauthorized actions from my debit card.

Never have used a credit card on my PSN. I normally don't download games, but when I do, I buy a card.

You do know that it's Sony's fault right? If they would have just left OtherOS alone no one would hack them...btw no one cares about your data, they only hacked it because Sony isn't giving the consumer base what it desires, said desire being OtherOS

Not affected by this as I don't own a PS3 and don't use Sony's network, but working for a credit card company at present, I can strongly advise that if you DO use the network, and you think any of your private information may be at risk, contact the credit bureau after reporting any cards that are potentially at risk as lost or stolen to the company. It may sound alarmist, but I've seen people in this situation get seriously hammered. :/

Exclusive: Third attack against Sony planned

A group of hackers says it is planning another wave of cyberattacks against Sony in retaliation for its handling of the PlayStation Network breach.

An observer of the Internet Relay Chat channel used by the hackers told CNET today that a third major attack is planned this weekend against Sony's Web site. The people involved plan to publicize all or some of the information they are able to copy from Sony's servers, which could include customer names, credit card numbers, and addresses, according to the source. The hackers claim they currently have access to some of Sony's servers.

Should the planned attack succeed, it would be the latest blow in a series of devastating security breaches of Sony's servers over the past month. The failure of Sony's server security has ignited investigations by the FBI, the Department of Justice, Congress, and the New York State Attorney General, a well as data security and privacy authorities in the U.K., Canada, and Taiwan.

Several weeks ago the hacker group known as Anonymous targeted several Sony Web sites, including Sony.com and SonyStyle.com, with a distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack in retaliation for what its members saw as Sony's unfair legal action against hacker George Hotz. Two weeks ago Sony's PlayStation Network, along with its Qriocity service and Sony Online, were the target of an attack that exposed the personal information of more than 100 million Sony customers. Sony was forced to shut down PSN, Qriocity, and Sony Online, and is currently working to bring them back online after rebuilding the security of its servers.

Sony says it doesn't know who orchestrated what it's calling a "highly sophisticated, planned" attack, but it has dropped hints that the group Anonymous is involved. Kazuo Hirai, chairman of Sony Computer Entertainment, told a Congressional subcommittee in a letter yesterday that the intruders on its servers planted a file named "Anonymous" containing the statement "We are Legion," part of the group's tagline.

Anonymous issued a statement yesterday denying it was involved in the PSN breach. "While we are a distributed and decentralized group, our 'leadership' does not condone credit card theft," the statement said.

Now it seems the same group of hackers that was able to infiltrate the PSN servers is planning to hit back against Sony.

Sony did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The reasoning is just, Sony fails as a company. Let people hack the damn thing.

I don't think you understand the meaning of people's information, such as credit card numbers, being stolen.

It's everything you need for identity theft.

Otherwise, illegal. There is no just thing about this.

To anyone who lives in the US, Sony is providing identity theft protection now. Not sure how to obtain it though. Sadly Sony is a jerk and I believe it's only in the US you can get it xD

I just saw that, which was pretty cool. They said they're gonna be sending emails to all PSN users (in the US apparently xD)

Yes because allowing a few select individuals to pass out personal information about thousands of people just because they aren't allowed to play things such as pirated games is just.
