About 20,000 on our file server, though I need to do some sorting out as there's a lot of duplicates there.

Accumulation over many years. I have been buying cassettes and albums since I was in my teens, as has Markie. Some of our music has gone from vinyl or cassette to MP3 (so the quality is not as good as CD), a lot of it is stuff we have on CD but the CDs are stored away, some is downloaded (that's generally stuff that we can't buy). It needs some sorting out though as there are copies of some CDs in more than one folder, tracks from vinyl or cassette that we also have CD quality versions of etc.

With almost everything we have ripped from CD we still have the CDs. Most of the cassettes and vinyl have gone though (mostly to charity shops or the tip).

We have a server so we can access files from my laptop, Markie's laptop, our "office" PC and our music playback PC. It has 500GB of storage on two mirrored drives, and is backed up onto tape (which are stored at work). It contains our music and, more importantly, everything to do with my work over many years, as well as scans of all our photos and loads of other stuff. It also runs a web server for testing websites I design locally (it's not accessible from the Internet).

Well a more modern version. Cassette would be a better word.
    See http://www.dabs.com/productview.aspx?Quicklinx=44KG and http://www.dabs.com/productview.aspx?Quicklinx=431G.
We paid somewhat less for the drive and a LOT less for the tapes on eBay.

The tapes are cartridges about 100mm square and store (depending on how much the files compress) between 80GB and 160GB each.

Around three and a half thousand. I'd normally just grab the lot and get Properties to get a total, but I've got so many hidden things littered around... either way, the total is a little under 30GB.

Do you know if the hard drive is OK? If so you could post that to me and I can copy the music and your other stuff (work, photos, whatever) onto DVD-ROMs for you (free, obviously). PM me if you're interested. I could also have a look at the problem with the system, but the cost of posting the whole box might be too much for you.
