I'm thinking of using my Xmas money to get a new mobile (my old one is the classic Nokia Brick, lol), and saw the Motorola V6 Maxx prepaid for $299 on Telstra Next-G (for the aussies).

Anyone else have this phone? Good / bad things about it?

Does it have all the features you want? Have you had a chance to play with one in a mobile phone shop? Do you like the look of it? Can you afford it?

If the answers to all those are "yes" then it's probably a good choice for you. If not then maybe there is something that will suit you better. A good mobile phone shop will help you choose (a less-good shop may try to sell you whatever they make most profit on).

The choice of a mobile phone is somewhat personal as you need to find one that suits you and what you want to do with it.

All mobile phones have their good points and their bad points so it could be a compromise. The main compromise is probably due to the cost limits and getting one that does most of what you want within your budget.

The other thing to consider if spending a LOT of money is the risk of it getting stolen, or of losing or breaking it. Insurance will cover some of that, but that's not cheap either.

Of course if the reason for purchasing is just to impress your mates then you probably just need to buy the same one as they have, or a higher model in that range, regardless of whether or not it suits you...
