Usually it just pops a breaker and then you like an idiot. I once tripped the 480V 3 Phase 500A input breaker on a 300KVa UPS. Paid for the service contract on that one. I was shutting down the UPS and forgot to put the UPS into bypass before I opened the rectifier input breaker. It blew 2 fuses and 1 of the rectifiers. That scared the crap out of me.

Yeah the big UPS put out a lot of heat when they are running on batteries. Did the ups keep running? In my experiences UPS have cause as many outages as they have prevented.

I use it as a lab box. I call it homo. Because the silly thing is so freaking loud, I keep in the closet. ---------- Post added 12th Jan 2012 at 11:33 PM ---------- Quote: There is some stuff in IT that sounds dirty. Like "tickle the san" or port flapping. That sounds like something over in the health section. My favorite, comes from back when I worked in operations. On the mainframe if a user's session disconnected sometimes it would hang and they could not get back in. The help desk would get calls and all they would say is "I'm hung". After a while you would start to recognize the voices. So we would reply with stuff like "That's not what your wife says", or "Quit bragging". Those were good times.

IME for every outage they prevent, they cause one, and fail to prevent another ![]() Then again perhaps it's due to the high voltage in the office - 255V - nominally 230V but with a tolerance of 207 V to 253 V! (it's about 220V at home).Circuit breakers would be nice - nothing more annoying than having to replace the fuse wire in the fuse box after an outage (naturally in the dark as the lighting circuit tripped too) and then replace the fuses in the plugs too. ![]() Quote:
