So my lap top hinges were just replaced since they had been broken and now it won't lock when it shuts. I want to know if their is a way to manually turn on this locking mechanism so that when I walk away and close it it locks automatically. I am a terribly paranoid person, this not being locked I don't like.

Left click the power/battery icon, choose more power options, when that window opens...in the left hand column you should see Choose what closing the lid does, click on that and set it accordingly....hope this helps

Theirs no way to do it so when you close the lid it locks? Cause it did that before, I don't know why it won't now.

Check that it is set to automatically lock when the lid is closed:
-right click on the battery icon next to the clock, select Power Options
-click "Choose what closing the lid does" on the left-hand column
-configure it for the "When I close the lid" option

If it is set to lock but it doesn't when you close it, then it indicates that something wasn't connected properly when they replaced the hinges and it isn't detecting that it is closing.

To manually lock it, open the Start menu. Next to the 'Shut Down' button click the little arrow to pop out a list, and select Lock.

Press windows key and L before you shut the lid. When I sent my Dell off to have the hinges replaced, the same thing happened to me :/ majorly annoying!

I'm obviously a tech expert  haha - the only other thing I can say to people is "have you tried turning it off and on again" lol

They've probably not connected the lid closing switch properly - I did that on my the first time I replaced the hinges!

For the times you forget <winkey>+L
    Right Click the Desktop
    Select Personalise
    Screen Saver
Select any screen saver (even blank)
Change "Wait" to be a low value
    On resume, display login screen

Then after you've been away from the screen for a while it will auto lock

One thing to be aware of is that when resuming from the screen-saver the desktop may flash up for a second.

(Instructions are for Windows Vista - 7 should be similar)

  13. Drop it a few times. That always helps.

'Sleep' operates similarly to 'lock', the key difference being that the former stops all of your processes, while with lock, everything still runs as normal. Depending on how fast your computer is, it might be quick to wake up from sleep mode.
