Final Fantasy VIII or IX?

9 is totally better in my opinion. I like 8 and it's fun and has a good story and all, but, you'll be mroe satisfied with 9. The gameplay and mechanics are better. 8's biggest flaw is it's character mechanics system really (like for battle)

 

IX is my favourite in the whole series! So I'm a little biased there, but overall I'd recommend them both as they're both awesome games.

 

You're lucky you haven't played them yet.

FFVIII is probably my MOST favorite though.

They're both worth playing.

 

9 all the way. It's my absolute favorite FF game in the series. The characters are really interesting, the music is rad, and I love the little side games in this particular edition.

I mean 8 is wonderful, too, but in different ways. And lets face it...8 doesn't have Zidane Tribal.

 

Try 9 first. 9 is great, 8 is okay.
VIII has weird pacing in my opinion, and the Draw system is irritating. In FF8 it's like the PC's just keep on coming and I'm not sure who's a good a character and who isn't. I like the characters of IX more, and I think the story is told better.
Squall and Cloud are probably the most popular FF protagonists but Zidane is the cutest :3 And Kuja is an incredible villain!

 

8 is much better in my opinion.

 

9 all the way. My first and favourite FF. I love everything about the game from the characters to the music. If you do choose FF9 take my advice, always have Vivi and Steiner in your team, those two are my favourite team members from any FF.

 

So these games are for PS2 right? I have only played FF12 & FF13+FF13-2

If you're looking for a "classic" FF, I'm pretty sure VII is the most hyped of the old 3-D polygonal games.

 

Final Fantasy IX is my favorite Final Fantasy.

Good choice on picking 9. It's one of my favorites, too.
8 is really good but the story goes whack in the 3rd disc. It's really fun if you play through and see just how badly you can "break" the game, though.

 

Forwarding what everyone else here has mentioned; go with 9.

IX ALL THE WAY!!!!!!!

Well, mostly because of this:

1) It has the classic FF job system. There's a thief, a summoner, a knight, a black mage, etc. Not like VIII or XII where you can build your characters the way you want, and thus it loses the "role" part of an RPG. No character is thus an overpowered superhero.

2) Story is cool, funny yet it has a serious message. FFVIII is basically a love story, IX is too.. but it's also a much better political, social drama. Stuff like discrimination, colonization, abuse of power, etc are in FFIX.

3) It's an easier gamer than VIII. So for beginners it's just fine. The older FFs are much harder IMO.

4) It has lots of comedy, slapstick and subtle. Maybe you'll not giggle, but you'll enjoy it. It doesn't have corny dialogue like FFVIII.

Everything about FF9 is exquisite. It's the best PlayStation game, not just the best Final Fantasy.
