Haha, welcome to EC. To send someone a friend request, you can go to their profile and on the right-side click "Befriend <name>", and it will give you an option to send them a friend request. If you're viewing a thread, you can click their username and a menu will pop up, the bottom option being "Add <name> to your contacts." Those are the two most common ways that I add people.
