Hey everyone just introducing myself. I'm 27. Spent 8.5 years in the army. 2 deployments overseas. I just came out on Facebook today. Nobody had known before and I thought it would be the easiest most effective and efficient way. I was very nervous because most of my friends are military and military guys are not known to be the most accepting especially in my MOS which was infantry. I wasn't worried about family as much because I've got a lesbian sister so that made it easier. Anyways back to fb. It has actually been awesome. I way underestimated the brotherhood that forms in the worst of conditions. I didn't see any negative remarks or even people befriending me. Everyone was very supportive. So I'm gonna end this. Feel free to ask me anything
Hey Mike, That's awesome to hear FB can be a useful tool from that perspective. Yeah I've fallen into the pitfall of thinking that certain guys are just gonna be intrinsically homophobic because of what they do etc... but those people have often turned out to be the most understanding and supportive. Some of my self-proclaimed 'open minded' friends actually turned out to be more difficult about it. People always surprise you lols. Great to hear your story, especially since I'm thinking of going into the army and I am worried about being accepted. Anyway, welcome to the forums!

How did you word it on Facebook? Did you just write "I'm gay" or was it a long heartfelt message? I've often thought about coming out on FB just to get it done and over Welcome

Hi Mike... I can only echo what Golgari has said. While I have not been in the military myself, I do work in a largely military environment, and a lot of people are military. My boss is a Major, and his boss, my senior boss is a Colonel. Obviously it's a no-go for what I'm saying here. You are right about not being the most accepting. For me also, because of complex issues in my life, telling my family is also a no-go. I think you have done a very brave thing, you are an inspiration, and I have utmost respect for people like yourself. I am so glad you are here and I am indeed, going to send you a friend request.
