That's cool. I prefer names without the xx's at the start, as a rule.

oh THANK YOU... all those xxx-s really bug me for some reason, probably because I know there's "real" words inbetween them but my eyes start freaking out trying to focus on them!

Yes, I was wondering why some people put one or more 'x' on either end of their usernames. It confuses me. I like usernames that are easy to distinguish between, and preferably easy to pronounce.

I think it started from the whole hardcore scene, which in turn eventually bred the scene which usually uses the x's everywhere. After all, hardcore (as in, the style of punk) is usually abbreviated to hXc, and by extension, that x sorta signifies the hardcoreyness of it all, I suppose. And what's the point in only having it in the middle when you can have it on the ends? What's the point of having one when you can have two?

Basically, it's a case of someone taking something from a particular scene, liking it, and hence upping the quantity.

    I guess.

to me the x's represent pain, cuts (X) and just look plain cool. and you can tell what kinda person it is (goth, emo) and know who might have the same tastes as you. i just like how it looks. this one website would not allow them because they said it made it 'too grafic'.

That sounds a bit silly. Thats like associating the letter.. lets say "e" to gang crime. Would websites disallow one of the most popular letters in the english language because it promoted gang crime?

  12. yea i agree with her the x's also help to find who most likely has the same taste as you and who it might be easiest to associate with plus i think it looks good

It's not more silly than associating E or X with a particular drug or 4:20 with a particular activity.

    Or 9/11, for that matter.

Humans make up symbols and symbolic systems all the time.

Thats true, the X's were also drawn on peoples hands back in the day if they were underage when they went out partying so they couldn't buy alcohol.

In other words, the X's have lost their meaning.

Oh, they might represent that - I'm not disputing that. I was more explaining what I thought the origin of their use was.

Yep, and then people went straight edge, and wore them like a symbol that they weren't drinking.
