    Hello,
I wasn't sure quite where to start, but introducing myself seems like the best way.

    a little bit about myself:

I’m a 19 year old university student, who is currently studying political science and philosophy. Truth be told, I’m a total political junkie. I grew up in a small town in rural Manitoba, Canada. When I say small town, I mean small town; like a town of 200 people, surrounded by farms and at least 300 kilometers from the nearest city. In my spare time, I really like to read or watch t.v. Anyone read anything good latley?

    As for my sexuality:

Over the last few months, I’ve acknowledged the elephant in the room or to mix the metaphor, the elephant in the closet and begun to accept that I’m gay. (first time I’ve written those words and not immediately erased them btw) Realizing just how much of myself that I’ve been repressing and continue to repress has been really difficult, but I know not moving forward is not an option. After all, now that I think about it, my cosy little closet is going to become quite suffocating, if I have to share it with an elephant.

    Justin

This is the funniest introduction thread I have ever seen :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes: And your orientation made me laugh out loud  I can see you're going to be a lot of fun

How did you come to realise you were gay?

    Welcome to the forum!

Hi, Justin, and welcome to EC! I'm sure it's quite a challenge to think about coming out when you live in such a small town, but it's great that you're taking the first steps! I think you'll find EC to be a warm, friendly, and helpful community, and I hope you'll stick around and join the conversations!

Hi, Justin. I'm thrilled you're taking the steps you are at your young age! I'm 56 and am just stepping out of the closet. I know what you mean about even typing the words "I'm gay", wait until you try to say them for the first time! Last month when I started telling people, the best I could muster was, "I'm not straight." Since then I've been able to say the words more and more easily - it's very liberating!!

Welcome to both you and your elephant! :smilewave

Welcome to the site! You must be going to the University of Manitoba then, right?

Thanks to everyone for such a warm welcome.

To reply to Robert’s question, I think I’ve always known that I was not straight from the time I was 11 or 12. And, ever since then, I guess I managed to keep it out of sight and out of mind. As if I refused to acknowledge it or put language to it, then it wasn’t real. As for why I started dealing with it now, I don't really have a good answer at all lol.

To Cascade, actually I go to Brandon University, which (when the faculty are not on strike) is a really great little undergrad uni.

    Thanks again,
    Justin

Hi, and welcome!! You sound a lot like me- I actually stared at the words, "I'm bi," when I first wrote them for about five minutes- it took a lot of effort not to erase them haha so I know where you're coming from! However, writing them is an awesome feeling, is it not?
