Hi. I am new to this site and wanted to share my story. I known I was gay since I was a young kid and struggled with it until I was in High School. I also had a hearing problem and other minor problems. I moved to a small mostly conservative town in Minnesota when it was hard to be accepted as a gay person or even having a disability. Some people in my town already judged me for having a disability so was even harder coming out as a gay person. That is why I decided to wait till college to come out of the closet. I could not imagine having to deal with two things that some people label as indifferent or abnormal in high school. Even my special ed class was incredibly judgmental and rude about gay people. I was suicidal at some points but so glad I made it out of High School alive.

my speech impediment i think was one of the reasons it took me till I was 25 to come out.

I was already called gay because I have a lisp on certain sounds, and the fact that I am gay was a coneincedence.

    but it still effected me.

    Hi:slight_smile:

A close friend of mine who is in my sign language class is Bi, Hard of Hearing and legally blind in one eye. She's still becoming an interpreter and it hasn't effected how she feels about her sexuality at all or her dating life (girl's got swag.) I also have another friend who is deaf in both ears (not sure of the percentage) and has cerebal palsy I believe. He's straight, has a girlfriend, a baby, a career, and people who love him. Just because it's called a "disablity," doesn't mean it actually hinders you from just being who are and just living your life.

Now I know that race and a disability are initially different, but when you look closely they're actually kind of the same as far as the context of how racial minorities and people with disabilities get treated by a majority who are not like them. So hey, if I don't let me being black keep me from doing my thing, you shouldn't let a hearing problem and some other minor problems hold you back either. And just in case you still feel shitty about it you always have us here at EC to dump on, cyberly speaking of course.

Just of out curiosty do you sign?

    Doc Faustus, do you sign?

Oh never mind Doc, I remember you from my other thread about the Deaf Community and Me. :icon_bigg You said you'd like to learn BSL, British Sign Language. You know the teacher I have now is from Britian, so American Sign Language is her second language.

    Have you started studying yet?

I just wanted to say that you are not alone. Do you find that people think you can't possibily be gay because you have a disability? That is the attitude that I came across coming out as a lesbian to certain members of my family. The close mindedness is frustrating. It makes me want to say we are human beings and as such we are sexual beings disabled or not and you cannot shove that part of me under the rug because it would be more convenient for you.
