Hello everybody! I am a 17 year old teenager living in rural Australia. I'm pretty much your typical nerd, getting top grades and the likes. I have known I'm gay since last year and have since told a few of my amazing friends. Having grown up in a conservative Christian home, it was hard for me to accept myself and I still haven't told my parents yet. I really want to, but I'm scared they'll go like my grandparents and say that the recent bashing of the gay teenager by a policeman at the Mardi Gras in Sydney was probably well deserved. Anyway, This is just a little about me. I can't believe I didn't find out about this site before! It's great to be here :icon_bigg
Hello and welcome! Just out of curiosity, what is Australia like for the LGBT? I live in the US and I was wandering if there is much different about overseas views.
Hiya !!! Oz seems like such a lovely place it's a shame there are still idiots being homophobic over there
Welcome to this place! I bet it must be difficult to be gay in such a conservative environment I still think it's brave you at least came out to your friends. And I know how hard parents can be sometimes, hopefully you'll one day gather the courage and strength to tell them. *hug*
---------- Post added 22nd Mar 2013 at 06:57 PM ---------- [/COLOR] Well, to answer your question it's okay. The Southern half of Australia is really great for it. There's a lot of Churches that don't approve, but there's a lot more support from general people and most people don't really care what the church has to say. As soon as you go about halfway up the east coast things go hard though. I live on the east coast up north-ish and it's really bad. The Catholic Church has A LOT of power here and obviously they aren't approving of it. In my life I've only ever met three people who are gay, one of whom is my friend. One of them came out though and was bashed, so it's kinda hard. It was getting better in the town I'm living in about 4 years ago, before I moved here, and they were getting gay youth groups and stuff. That's all changed now though because Catholic Church kicked up a fuss and it's all just fallen apart. So to answer your question in short no, it isn't so good. It's why I'm planning to go to uni in a big city to get away. How is it in the US? You always hear things, but I don't actually know what it's like over there.
