Halò, my name is Fionnlagh and I thought I would introduce myself. I'm enjoying living in Edinburgh to study though I'm originally from the Hebrides. English is not my first language, Scots Gaelic is, so sorry if I make silly mistakes. Only a few of my closest friends, including my Boyfriend, know I'm bisexual because I'm worried about how my parents will react since they are members of the Church of Scotland and we go to the Kirk every Sunday. As I said, I'm from the Hebrides, and although it's not the most LGBT accepting place to live, I've been shaped by the culture I grew up in. I love playing my penny whistle and I have been highland dancing since I was a bairn. Sport is what I enjoy too, especially football! Anyway, mòran taing!
Hi Fionnlagh, and welcome to EC! I was in Scotland many moons ago, very much like Canada in many ways...hope you find what you're looking for here!
Hey! Wow you are the first guy I have seen who can actually speak Scots Gaelic! My family comes from there, they moved south to find work about 50 years ago. I have relatives who can speak it. Since I moved to Ireland, I have found out that my Name sounds completely different in Irish (Owen) compared to Ewan (as it should be) ... I am still amazed at how people can speak these languages, I tried some Scots years ago and failed completely Also re the CoS , well alot of my family are part of that (I was years ago as a kid) and all of them have no problem what so ever with me being gay. Most of the discrimination seems to originate from other sources. Glasgow seems to have a problem if you leave the centre. Edinburgh as you know has a cool gay scene. Ah the fun me and my guy have had there after seeing matches at Murrayfield :rolle:
There is a big Scottish influence on Canada, especially because of the Highland Clearances, where many Scots were basically kicked off their land and had to emigrate to the New World. Nova Scotia (Alba Nuadh) in particular is home to many Gaelic speakers. Sprag Session, one of my favourite Celtic fusion bands is from there
Hiya! That's kind of cool! I've never actually seen a native speaker of Scottish Gaelic before. My dad (& everyone born before him) is Scottish so I have a lot of family (who I've never met before) living over there
They've had a huge influence here in Montreal as well (sort of an affinity for the French and less for the British LOL!). Most of the old money here is Scottish (and extremely wealthy)
Hello Fionnlagh, and :welcome: to EC! I hope you find the support you need to come out to your parents.
